I admire someone who can wear a fedora and pull it off. I can't. So I'm sticking with my Stetsons. I'm sticking with my bald spot and/or my Leinie ballcap.

I admire someone who can wear a fedora and pull it off. I can't. So I'm sticking with my Stetsons. As coincidence would have it, this one is also a Stetson. The back story goes like this: We're having dad moved from Indiana to Omaha this weekend. In fact, the vault was just exhumed in Evansville today. The re-burial is Saturday morning. I looked at the weather forecast, and it's supposed to be bitter cold on Saturday. Somehow, it popped into my head that I was going to need a hat, and somewhere in that thought my natural competitiveness with my brothers kicked in, and I wanted a nice hat. Whatever happens on Saturday, I intend to win the hat contest. I have a few hats that I've accumulated over the years, but none of them are of any particular quality. Mostly junk, actually. Barely better than theatrical props. Didn't know where to start. Went to a couple of men's stores around here, and no one had much of anything, and none had any idea where I could go. Western hats are no problem. Lots of local retailers carrying plenty of inventory in every price range. Did find this guy: This is the textbook hipster hat guy Russell is talking about: The finest, bespoke hats from "Recapitate". Here's their "About The Hatter" As much as I'm into the "synth punk/skateboarder/billiard shark" scene, the real problem with Recapitate is its all custom with a three week lead time. Ended up getting this one from Levine Hat Co out of St Louis. Can't say enough about them. Super helpful, fast shipping. Nice. Its a real Made in USA (Go MAGA!!) Stetson, and really wasn't all that expensive. Anyway, that's my hat story. I assume my brothers will be quivering in shame.

If I ever do get a hat, having seen that and jeff's original post, at least I'll know how to pose if someone is taking a picture.

Jeff, as my old country music mentor (who wore cowboy hats) told me, "Son, when little girls and their moms talk to me in the grocery store, they're talking to the hat." That might be a Midwestern concept; he is from Ohio.

I have one much like it but hats make me look like a bigger dork. Sigh! It's easy to think that if you don't wear a hat. I didn't start wearing hats until about 15 years ago, and it was a pretty self-conscious thing to go out in public wearing one the first few times. I think it's because you don't see a lot of hats besides ball caps or seed caps anymore. Now I've got them for all seasons, and enjoy wearing them. For one, they are functional. Get a hat, LJ, and wear it for a week. You'll be wearing one from that week on.

Jeff, as my old country music mentor (who wore cowboy hats) told me, "Son, when little girls and their moms talk to me in the grocery store, they're talking to the hat." That might be a Midwestern concept; he is from Ohio. Interesting observation. As you might imagine, cowboy hats (and boots for that matter) are not a common sight in Milwaukee. On average people come up to me and compliment my Stetsons a couple of times a week. Men, women, and kids and there doesn't seem to be any racial barriers either. Everyone seems to like the hats. This is one of my favorite hat stories: A few years ago I had supper in a local restaurant. I was in line to pay my bill at the register and there was a young couple in front of me. I noticed that their son, who was maybe 4 or 5 years old, was looking me up and down pretty good. Finally he tugged at his dad's jacket and said, "See that man there? He's a cowboy. I know because he's wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots. And he's wearing gloves like cowboys wear." It made my day and made me just a little more confident about the younger generation. Until that time I wasn't sure that kids knew about cowboys anymore.

I admit to being such a shameless JT fan that I would actually consider buying one of these.
