Sad news at the passing of Charlie Daniels. Of all the things he did over his long career, the thing that cracked me up the most was this insurance commercial:

Bummer. R.I.P. Charlie. We’ll hang up your fiddle, hang up your bow…

For the longest time in the 70's, I could not keep Charlie Daniels and Marshall Tucker straight. But I liked them both.
I shudder to think what certain recent events did to Charlie's old heart.
Rest in Peace.

My Charlie Daniels story: I used to venture to his website now and then to read his hyper-rightwing, Islamophobic and xenophobic ramblings in his blog. He never disappointed in writing something outrageous.
In one blog entry, he wrote about how "real" Christians couldn't believe in Evolution. Readers could write comments and I wrote one saying that there were plenty of people of faith who believed in the Theory of Evolution and had even contributed to our understanding of it. A couple of days later, I got an email from Daniels. Written in all caps, he told me how utterly wrong I was and how Evolution was "THE BIGGEST HOAX EVER FOISTED ON MANKIND." He was quite strident.
I can't recall if I replied or not.

Now there's a story, David. He did indeed have that reputation.

Now there's a story, David. He did indeed have that reputation. I went to two of Charlie’s concerts here in Milwaukee. I paid to hear him play and be entertained. That’s was I got. Not one word of politics or his opinions on anything. Unlike other concerts I have been to where the performer believes I need to be told what to think and who to vote for. Good grief! My perspective is, “Just shut up and play.” “That’s what I am paying you for.” Charlie may have had some nutty ideas but he did not spew them to the audience that was PAYING to see him. He was a class act and gave a GREAT performance each time I saw him. The last time I saw Charlie was only 4-5 years ago. He was slowing down. He would sit out every 3rd or 4th song. It didn’t matter as his band was fabulous. They would have been worth paying for to hear on their own.

@dhanners55, that’s a heck of a story. I’m again reminded: “everyone loves Bach, Beethoven, or Berlioz playing in their dining room during a nice meal, but nobody would love actually having Bach, Beethoven, or Berlioz themselves playing in their dining room during a nice meal...”
Thread needs a tune that’s not about headcutting the devil:

I have found that entertainers are often a bit nuts. Except for Kanye. He is one model of stability.

I saw CD several times. While I don’t agree with his politics he was a hell of a musician. RIP Charlie.
