I just played a very nice guitar that answers virtually all my needs for a backup to G2, now that the Barbarossa is in Barb's hands and no one will ever pry it away from her....
This guitar has --
Solid rosewood back and sides Gloss spruce top 1 3/4 inch nut Cutaway Fishman blender pickup w/ built-in tuner American-made Lifetime warranty Hardshell case
All for $1,589, on sale at Willie's ... I like how it sounds, plays and looks.
It's a JC-16RGTE and there are probably more letters I am forgetting.
Anyone know anything about this model? Talk me out of this, please, so I don't have to live with the shame of owning a brand I have smat for so long...

really?
Is this another "I got a new guitar" thread? I imagine it'd make a good workhorse, a great backup for the Goodall. I tend to like both the J and the M (0000) Martins -- better than the OMs. They've more bottom end oomph and it seems one doesn't have to work too hard at making them sound big.

It's for real, and I just went and got it. I took along three old electic guitar pedals, which Willie gave me $100 for and I came home with the guitar, the case, an extra set of strings and the warranty for $1,600 (including tax)! I have 48 hours to bring it back, if I don't like it.
People, the sound and playability and looks and comfort are really great! Where has this Martin been all my life?
And if you are plugged in, when you punch the onboard tuner switch, it automatically cuts out the signal to the amp. What a great gig guitar.

Just when you think you know someone, he goes and buys a Martin. I'm sure it's a great guitar. Congrats, Bill. Tim

It's really nice! I am sitting here with it. Which Neil Young song would you like to hear?

Good for you Bill. It seems to me Martin has done much to improve their playability in recent years. I know my new one is set up perfectly. The Martin jumbo is actually smaller than most other companies jumbo's. It's got a lower bout of 16" so it's more like a grand concert rather than a jumbo. Enjoy!!!!!!!

Congratulations again Bill. To think that a Goodall guy fell for a Martin is amazing. I've always liked the Martin J models, as powerful as a Martin dreadnaugth, but smoother.
As a measure of Mr. Hammond's smittenness, it is also amazing that the Barbarossa is permanently in Barb's hands. (Although having met both Barb and Barbarossa, such smittenness is not surprising)

Wait a minute, is this another trick?

Bill, How thick is it...Depth wise. Looks like 3 3/4 at the neck joint, 4 7/8 at the end pin It is set up perfectly, Ken, and has really thick bass and good sustain.

Wait a minute, is this another trick? NOT another trick! I have it here in my lap! It has cool inlay rosette, too, kinda a multicolored herringbone, and that same material is used for the back strip. The satin finish on the back and sides doesn't bother me at all. Very comfy.

Here is the rosette. Interesting that they build the J model with 1.75 nut width. They must engineer the thing for fingerstylists who can't afford an OM or want a bigger sound....

Bill, there's a reason Martin has attained the status it enjoys. Don't feel bad about buying a great guitar from a respected maker. The 2 first real guitars I had were Martins, and I still have one of them. It is a custom, and will leave me when I shuffle off this mortal coil.
Congrats, and enjoy!

Thanks, Shannon. What blows me away about this guitar, I guess, is how positively MODERN it seems. I mean, the cutaway, the Fishman Blender, the onboard tuner, the sound, the sustain, the lack of a thuddy bass -- it seems very Asian, and I mean that in a good way.
It DOES feel good to know it was built in Nazareth, by Nazoids.

Bill did you now that this model is actually manufactured in China through the old Sigma people and then shipped to Nazareth for final set-up -- that's how they keep the cost down? At $1,600 you may have gotten a good deal but I understand these J models are soon to flood the states and a pirce drop is expected. Plus I understand the pick-up system is prone to feedback while the tuner is set to 438 hz in the factory -- diffcult to tune up wiht others. besides that it looks like just a warmed over square peg-headed Larrivee OMV. I'm sure it will work out for you in spite of all the draw backs. It is a Martin.
Gotcha....
That'll teach you for calling them dumb old Martins.
