I want something large enough to allow me to pull a 12,000 pound trailer. Small pickups don't do that very well, if at all. Maybe just buy an F-350 and take the hood off?

Buy something else. It's still a free country for the most part anyways. That is the problem. All of the new full sized trucks have joined the tall hood competition. There are plenty of smaller, quite capable pickup trucks to choose from. Fuel economy/CO2 regulations have ensured it (more on that tomorrow I'm told. Stay tuned). For now anyways.
I want something large enough to allow me to pull a 12,000 pound trailer. Small pickups don't do that very well, if at all.
Oh, I understand. Wife bought me an F150 with a 5.0L, crew cab, 4x4 for our 30th anniversary that'll do all that (not exactly sure on the trailer tow but it's good enough for what I need to tow). Might have to go for Cosmic Wonder's Ecoboost for that. But again, there'll be more on that tomorrow.

I need one that will allow me to quietly pull Cosmic Wonder's travel trailer out of his driveway.

Minor rant but here goes:
I have a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4x4 ext cab. Every option except for the diesel (which I'm kind of sorry I didn't get) and the moonroof (which I'm glad I didn't). Out the door cost was $26.5k brandy new.
It is a truck, rides like one, has the appointments a truck should have with a little extra. Its got 137,000 miles on it and has been good to us.
When it needed new back brake calipers, the dealer gave me a 2018 to drive. Both my wife (who drives it most of the time) and I agreed that we hated the new one. Had car / SUV appointments in it. Drove like an SUV. Had all sorts of whizbang new features that neither of us liked. Was stickered at almost $60k.
We have decided that we need to keep this truck until we are dead, I'm not paying half of what I paid for my house to buy a truck that I wouldn't even like.
By the way, saw an ad for a used 2007 with similar miles and a crew cab and they were asking $22k for it.

Glad I’m not in a truck buying mood.

This got me wondering what it would cost to replace my 2007 Toyota 4Runner for which I paid $20K in 2010. Turns out another 2007 4Runner today would set me back $14K! That’s just wrong.

That rules out older Dodge Diesels, they can't do anything quietly. I have to turn mine off so the guy in front of me can order at the drive thru.

I need one that will allow me to quietly pull Cosmic Wonder's travel trailer out of his driveway. It’s not in the driveway. It’s in the garage. 😎 Mike

The size of the needed truck has just been bumped up a notch.

The garage is guarded by fiercely snoring wiener dog.
