I've been thinking about buying a microphone. I've got one, but know nothing about it besides the fact that I got it years ago at Radio Shack before that place went off the map and had no idea what I was doing.
Do I need one? Not really. But every now and then I like to set up my personal PA stuff in the house or outside and play all amped up. But I do want a decent mic in case I need it in public situation. I know there are unidirectional and omnidirectional mics, and that sometimes I look down at the fretboard or in another direction but most of the time I look forward. And I want a microphone that fits into a mic stand. I don't want to spend tons of money, but I do want something decent I ever use it in a public situation. And yes, AmanaJoe, my ears are open to your thoughts.

Shure SM58. Proven, butt simple, can be used to hammer nails in a pinch.
Don't over think it.

You'll probably need a cord to plug it in, too.

I have used the SM 58 throughout my music career (a wedding in 1978 and a funeral in 1989). It has never let me down.

Maybe just sing louder, eh?
When I played with the crazy guy I used the two Shure mics mentioned. When we recorded we used Sennheisers. I don’t recall which ones but I know they were pricey.

I am so damned loud when I talk I have to remind myself to whisper when I'm in a school hallway. If I raised my voice you'd hear me in Indiana.

Todd, I have a Shure mike that I would be all too happy to give you, and it even has an on/off switch. It served me well for many years and is finished in fashionable flat black.

I would take you up of that, Bill. But instead of giving it to me, would you be willing to accept a bottle of 42° Degree Winery Tatanka Red? A very tasteful table wine from a local winery with some lovey and owners who care about their craft.

The two standard reasonably priced mics that rule the market are the Shure 58 and the Sennheiser 835. Both are comparably priced. The Sennheiser tests out a little bit better in most comparisons, but they are very close.
Both are available with an on/off switch. Some turn up their nose at the thought of a mic having an on/off switch, but if you are performing without a sound guy that can mute your mic and/or your mixer isn't next to you on a stand, an on/off switch can be nice to have.
Most higher-end mics don't have the on/off switch as it is assumed anyone that shells out for the thin margin of performance a higher-end mic delivers will perform with someone at the board or will be adept at handling their own sound and will have a mixer of some type close at hand.
But, if you are getting a 58 or 835, the switch is only $5 extra, and for general use (and passing around at gigs/school events) it can be a handy thing to have.

Joe may have some other suggestions but a SM58 is and has been a industry standard for a very long time. Decent sounding, has the wind screen built in, takes the standard mic clip, is built like a brick outhouse and you can still get parts for it.

I might also bring along to I-Jam my made-in-Iowa Ultrasound Pro amp, if anyone might be interested in buying it.

I am not sure if anyone mentioned it but an SM58 might be a good choice..
