Seeing the homeless and drug issue starting to appear in Missoula and Kalispell now. This seems like an unsolvable problem and maybe THE PROBLEM of our times. Or at least will be soon. I don't see how this problem keeps growing un addressed. I'm just hoping I'm far enough out in the sticks and old enough that I can just bury my head in the sand and finish my run.

I'm wondering about the decline of Western Civilitation as well, for a different reason. Seen yesterday:

Nobody said Western Civilization would survive forever.
History is rife with civilizations that existed for long periods of time, but none so far have lasted forever.
I'd bet in every case, they could see it coming, but couldn't do anything to stop it.

We are not anywhere near unique in this respect--read any social history of England between, say, 1600 and 1900 (notably Henry Mayhew's 1851 London Labour and the London Poor) or Tyler Anbinder's excellent Five Points. Then there's this famous pair of Hogarth prints from 1751--

Margot Robbie, for starters. BTW, the Strib's film critic gave "Barbie," with Mizz Robbie in the title role, 3 1/2 stars (out of 4). He was amazed how deep and thoughtful it was. I'm not kidding.

I don't think I will see the Barbie movie. In a bit of studio rivalry, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" come out on the same day, July 21.

Considering the excellence of Greta Gerwig's previous films as director, Lady Bird and Little Women, I look forward to seeing Barbie and whatever else she makes.
Oh yeah, poverty, homelessness and addiction are a bummer for sure.

These Hogarth prints depicted a gin craze that ravaged London in the 18th Century. Notice the caption at the top of the right-hand print. And I (love this) quote:
'Originally imported from Holland in the late 17th century, the original Dutch spirit known a jenever was a weaker (at around 30 percent alcohol by volume) drink. But the gin distilled in London was fiendishly strong and very often adulterated with hideous impurities. Make no mistake: we're not talking any kind of "dry," botanical-based sophistication here. It was more of a throat-searing, eye-reddening, vomit-churning hell broth.'

Vomit Churning Hell Broth. Great punk band from the 70s. I saw them perform at PunkFest in Grant Park. It was a dreadful concert, a dreadful music fest, and, as I recall, the weather was dreadful, too. In other words, it was perfect for PunkFest. It was relatively peaceful with only 11 deaths and a few hundred overdoses. There were more destroyed guitars at PunkFest than in the entire career of The Who. I made over $3000 selling safety pins to kids who wanted to imitate their idols with pins through the eye brows, cheeks, ears, and, so I hear, the nipples. I probably should have sterilized those pins. Ah, memories, you know?

Speaking of the who, I talked to my sister yesterday (chicago), and she had just seen a production of tommy. Said it was fantastic, was guessing it would go to broadway.
