Don’t know about you folks, but most of the year here, the only decent fruit we can get is apples, oranges, and bananas. A few pears. Any stone fruit we get, peaches or apricots, are rock hard and tasteless. The Okanagan valley in the interior grows incredible fruit, but it’s only available for a short time, and we don’t get a lot of the really fresh stuff down here — ripe peaches don’t travel well. So in the summer, we make a pilgrimage to the small town of Keremeos, and buy peaches.
We went this week. Is there a fruit anywhere more perfect than a perfectly ripe peach? So sweet and juicy, you damned near need a bath when you’re done. Worth the drive, (it’s a lovely drive, about 4 hours, so we stay overnight.)

Is there a fruit anywhere more perfect than a perfectly ripe peach? Nope. And I've been enjoying them daily for the past few weeks.

For me it's a toss up between that perfect peach and that perfect pear. Both best enjoyed hovering over the sink or a trash can. The problem is the joy to disappointment ratio runs about 20:1 here in Montana.

Yeah but what about Herb? It's legal here in Montana now.

There's a produce stand at the MN State Fair every year that sells Colorado peaches that are unlike any I've ever had. OMG.

A banana that is not a Cavendish. We can find a variety at Lee Lee International Market, but it's not close to us. Some, however, are plantains that need to be cooked and I'm not always sure what I'm getting. I had the best banana I've ever eaten from a grocery store in Hawaii years ago, but don't know what it was.

When we moved into this house, it had peach trees in the yard that produced excellent fruit. Alas, the trees don't live long. We get oranges from the yard that are delicious. Otherwise good fruit is rare.

I just came home with a lug of Colorado peaches. We get a lug every year from a local church youth group that has some kind of deal with a nursery in Colorado. A refrigerated truck shows up from Colorado and we get a call, "Peaches are in!".
Typically, they bring in a couple trucks from Georgia in late July and then two or three more trucks from Colorado in mid-August. This year, no trucks from Georgia. Georgia had a very, very short peach crop. Most years, we prefer the Colorado peaches to the Georgia ones. This year we especially prefer the Colorado peaches as there were no Georgia peaches.

What I've been hearing is that it's a stellar year for grapes in Iowa. From what I gather is that grape vines have deep root system enabling them to survive a drought, and that the amount of sugar produced in each grape has a lot to with the weather. The dryer, the better for wine. But again I know nothing.

Apricots. Mangos. And Ice Cream Bannas. Mike Funny thing is, we get better mangos throughout the year. And when they are good…lordy.

The problem is the joy to disappointment ratio runs about 20:1 here in Montana. The batch we just got, bought at the orchard, are batting 100 percent. Rest of the year, we don’t even get that ratio of peachs. Pears a bit better.

Yup. We get them all year — little tasteless rocks. And then, for that brief time, so good.

Cherries from Washington State have been good lately. Grapes from I don't know where have also had flavor.

Yeah, the cherries are good. We had some with dinner (salmon, rice pilaf). But the blueberries with lunch were too tart to eat. Diane was making a dinner to take to a lady in the church who's ill. She got raspberries to go with it and 50 percent of them were bad. You almost have to go to a farmer's market to find good stuff. Grumble, grumble.
