Good morning. Up early to do some volunteer work with the Audubon folks at the Ahhochee Hill Santuary doing annual maintenance on Eastern Bluebird nesting boxes and other projects on the property. After that it's guitars in the afternoon and armored rugby this evening.

Good morning. Last night I learned that I'll become a grandfather for the first time in August. It's a total surprise and a very welcome one. I'm reminded of when I discovered that I have a half-brother, four years ago. Just when you think life is through surprising you, it does.
Yesterday the workmen finished building a raised garden for my lovely wife to use. It makes her very happy. That makes me happy.
This afternoon I'll cook a chuck roast for dinner. It was on sale for half the usual price. Chuck is about the only cut that remains affordable so we have it fairly often.
Rock on.

Warmest congrats, Don. There is nothing better. I hope your grandbaby will be within a reasonable distance for visiting.
My second (Wendy already has 2, technically 3) is due in a few weeks. Fortunately they are here...for now. Her hubby is finishing his Phd and has been applying far and wide. Oh well.
I hesitated, but the "technically 3" remark refers to her grandson by her daughter. She got a job at Sonic at age 15. Her manager and a coworker drugged her and raped her. Micah is the result of that rape. What an amazing young man, ridiculously talented, and with a sweet, larger than life personality. Wendy raised him as her own. He refers to her as Mom.

We didn’t get as much snow as predicted yesterday but we got lots of rain. Tonight it’s supposed to hit -6° so you know what will happen to all the water. The wind is blowing like crazy so I think this is a good day to hunker down and not go out.
BTW, I got a call and email from Martin Guitars several days ago congratulating me on being a winner in a drawing-something I entered online and forgot about. Anyway a package is being delivered today with a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff-sweatshirt, hat, leather strap, a few other things, and some sets of their new Kovar strings. I have no idea what to expect as far as the strings are concerned but I will give them a try. A notice from UPS this morning says the box will be delivered today. I wonder if there are cookies?

Nickel/cobalt wrap wire on those Kovat strings.

You're one of the few guys I know who is lucky at cards AND love. And this is coming just in time for your birthday, too.
Now to decide what to make for breakfast.

It 17° out there. That is freakin’ cold for the Willamette valley. We have a light dusting of snow, more to come. Hopefully the freezing rain will stay south of us, but we will see. Not going anywhere today.
Nita bought a half turkey breast from Traders. I roasted it last night and it canpme out great! I dusted it with Ploughboys Yardbird rub, let it sit in the fridge for four plus hours, put it into a 325° oven until it hit a internal temp of 165° at its thickest part, let it rest for 15 minutes before serving. Juicy and perfectly done, Mike highly reccomends this. Enough left over for sandwhiches and soup.

I best get out there and deal with it before the temps bottom out.

That is wonderful news, Don. We hear people saying what a great gig it is to be a grand dad, but it's impossible to truly understand until it happens.
It's a bit chilly up here. Last night the water stopped working so I had to get into the crawl space and put a heater next to the well's pressure tank. If there is a hell it probably closely resembles my crawl space.
Shining up my J45 today for a photo session as it's going on the market. Found a Martin OM I can't live without :-).
Cheers

Good morning. 0F-13F cloudy. Winter has finally come to MN. Saturday shop. That 1973 J-200 Artist will be back today for some pre-repair consulting. This is probably going to be the most expensive repair I've ever done. He is going to spend $1600-$1800 to get this guitar back in playing condition and that is without doing any major finish work. You name it and it needs it. After shop we may venture out into the cold to get a window kit for the window near DaWife's desk. It's a large window and the only one we have a draft problem with. That means she gets lunch somewhere, maybe Vietnam Star. 66 Days Until Spring. Stock photo.

That bridge is rather unique, don't recall seeing a similar one on a Gibson before ... though I did once see a Snickers bar run over on a Phoenix street on a summer afternoon.

Ahhhh. Spent an hour and a half out in the invigorating outdoors. Shoveling snow mostly. Also took down some of the outdoor Christmas lights, trees, and wreaths. The rest I’ll just turn off the lights and wait for more Spring like conditions.

CONGRATULATIONS CORNFLAKE!!! Nothing more fun than grandkidz.
Back in from a couple of hours of snowblowing 4" of wet, heavy snow. Wind is picking up and more snow is forthcoming. Three out of four granddaughters arriving shortly for the afternoon and evening. Our son and I have ongoing woodworking projects, the granddaughters are drawn to the workshop and have their own safety goggles and hearing muffs.

We probably have 10 – 15 inches of snow on the ground and expecting more. We’ve been shoveling and blowing snow for three days. The neighbors with larger snow blowers and earlier rising times help us out. Today it’s dangerously cold. We may just scoop a path for our femailman and call it done for today.

Morning!
Making lasagna today for my football feast. Chips and dip on hand for appetizers and desert.
Bit of shame as today the scale crossed over 30 and dipped into the 20s. A whole new playing field. And the lowest weight I've been at for at least 20 years. Oh well, I will hit it hard on Monday.

With uncanny, perverse intelligence, our thermostat died around midday yesterday, with the coldest weather in months just arriving. It was a 30-year-old Honeywell part-smart unit, hooked up via a two-conductor wire to the much younger gas furnace. The LCD display was blank, and the heating tech who was sent out figured it had just failed--he did a continuity test on the wiring and declared that OK. He also suggested that it made sense for me to just buy a replacement and install it myself--just two wires to connect--because if he installed a replacement the charge would be north of $200.
So I took his advice, bought a slightly smarter new Honeywell ($25), and proceeded to follow the instructions. No joy. I had to dismantle the ceiling-high CD shelves that had accumulated around the thermostat site to make working room, and spent several hours running down into the basement to see whether the furnace was responding as I tried all the possible wiring connections. And since the inside temp was heading for the middle 50s, I also started up our big wood stove for the first time in years. (It used to heat the whole house--as long as I kept feeding it oak and birch, but in the middle of the night the old oil furnace would kick in.)
I finally gave up and called the heating contractor's hotline and got an older tech to come out around 8:00 pm. When he did a continuity test, he got nothing on any of the thermostat line's wires, so he connected directly to the furnace and it fired right up. So we have heat, but the thermostat setting has to be offset to accommodate the 10-degree difference between the always-chilly basement and what's comfortable upstairs. And we'll be consulting with the contractor's electrician to see whether it's possible to pull new wiring. I'm not optimistic--the old heating-system wiring is original to this 1928 house, and I suspect that it was stapled to the studs before the lathe-and-plaster walls were finished. I'm currently researching wireless thermostats, which will require access to low-voltage power on both the sensor and furnace-switch sides.
The joys of vintage-home ownership.

Saturday shop is done. Only the guy with the J-200 today. He mentioned he was a painter and then the memory came back to me. I did some work for Derk back in the 80s when the State of MN Wildlife bought a loon painting for use in something they were doing.

Blustery and blowing snow and pretty cold. Pat is making Navy Bean soup. She can still see well enough to cook as long as I help read smaller print on the recipes.
Spent several hours with our bass player this AM working up Alfie for a gig this Tuesday. It's a great song with tricky phrasing and he sings it pretty darn well.
