Much hand-wringing over MN's new flag design, chosen after a commission was created, designs were sought from the public and semifinalists selected before a winner was picked. Now some county boards have voted to seek a return to the original design and there's even a push to put the issue on a statewide ballot. I think it's all pretty silly, as no one flies the state flag except government entities, really. But I like the simplicity of the new one -- the state shape is suggested in the dark blue, the star of the north reflects the state motto (L'etoile du Nord") and the lighter blue suggests our thousands of lakes. The only state flag that I really love is New Mexico's. What's yours look like? The new:

The Oregon flag is so ugly I won’t anyone with its image. I do quite like the California flag. The bear is cool.

Indiana’s flag has a squirrel on a spit over a campfire.

I like the new Minnesota flag. I don't know what the old one looked like. As Bill said, it has a nice simplicity.
Too many of the flags incorporate a detailed image that can't be comprehended at the size and distance that you view a flag.

New York. I don't know what any of this BS symbolizes, and I am not going to waste any more time than I have already looking it up. We got water. We got mountains. We got greenery. We got blind Justice and knit watch caps on crooked spears.
I think Excelsior is that curly wood-shaving-like stuff they use for packaging freight.

Are you sure that’s a star and not a snowflake?

Are you sure that’s a star and not a snowflake? There WERE some submissions with snowflake designs, but the stylized star prevailed. Lotsa folks upset that there's not a loon on it.

Are you sure that’s a star and not a snowflake? It could easily be both. The best symbolism is always ambiguous. The people who hate the new flag are the same ones who wouldn't have recognized the old one but who need to be pissed off about something.

I rather like the new Minnesota flag - simple and elegant
In regard to the Michigan state flag, what's not to like about dancing deer?

On the NYS flag, that's not a watch cap (though NY weather would certainly justify one) but a Phyrgian cap, associated with liberty. No idea why Lady Liberty's staff is bent, though I'd bet there are some internet symbol-decoders who have worked out something niftily disturbing.

The Dakota words mean "Land where the waters reflect the sky." Note the wild rice on the left, how the loon's wings form the letter "M" and no, those are not green mountains, but fir trees.
