I used to hang out on the Front Porch forum. When it died, I went searching. Found a couple of Porch people had migrated here. Two of those people never show up anymore. One curmudgeon still drops by occasionally. And, if I recall correctly, one much happier person here came from there.
I mostly play guitar, but dabble in/on other strings and plunk on keyboard. And singing is a big part of my life. I've been paid to make music occasionally, but mostly it has been the volunteer kind with community choruses and churches.

I wonder how I should categorize myself as a musician. I’ve been playing since I was sixteen, mostly in duos. Made my living at it for 3 years, never paid much but never starved either. Now I play the occasional nursing home gig where I find I am playing to my peer group, but mostly play for tips at various functions and eateries. Do it for fun rather than necessity even though I prefer paying gigs.

Fiddlerina and I play senior centers, retirement homes, and assisted living homes too. Often we do it together with Bob and Kristy Black (Bob is a former Blue Grass Boy and known all over the world). The thing is, we are paid. We enjoy those gigs but these places aren’t charities, they have a budget for entertainment. If you’re playing these homes for free, someone else is getting the money.
Just sayin’.

Yes, they do have a budget for money. And they are required to spend that budget. These places will not hesitate to pay you if you ask.

Well, they hesitated to pay us at that Valley Home gig in Waterloo. In fact, they chased us out of the building. I told you not to do the Duck Dance with those ladies. But did you listen? Do you ever?

Occasionally, paul, I'm right. But I admit my error that time. Although when you tell that story you always neglect the trombone slide episode. Gee, I wonder why.

NO ONE is to mention the trombone slide incident. You named your price and I paid it. End of story!

Just sayin’. These are for profit centers. Profit motive keeps them from paying for live entertainment. The people I work directly with are underpaid and over worked. Yes, some CEO somewhere is buying another yacht, but I get to play for people who really appreciate it.
