El.....I enjoyed that a bunch, sir. Don't recall if we ever met or visited, I've seen you at the AG forum. I'm Don (one of a thousand or so here ) from SW Kansas, near Dodge City. I've got one on that Christmas page also - Angels We Have Heard on High - with my pickin' partner Bill Norman. Again, nicely done.

It's funny but my little tune doesn't seem to come up on my browser when I go to Gene's page < I've also recorded Angels We Have Heard--great tune--nice approach, Don, with the two gits. El

El.....don't know which link you have for Gene's page, but I have - www.ehmz.org/music/soundhole/2007Holiday/I'd love to hear your rendition of Angels. With ours, we were both in standard tuning, capoed on the 4th. I'm on my Takamine and Bill is on a high strung Ibanez dread. Started exploring high strung guitars after reading Doug Young's article in AG awhile back.

I just sent Gene a short semi-improvised medley of Away in a Manger and Silent Night. I threw this together for the gig I did with J last week. I figured it was dec 2, so we should get in the spirit. Didn't go over as well as I thought. People were "no...., it can't be Christmas yet, I haven't started shopping...." :-) Oh well, I came home and recorded it.

I guess I should have added in my last post that Gene just added another song for me, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", with Kari Sealund helping me out on vocals.
She's the one with the higher pitched voice.

I just sent Gene a scratchpad recording idea I was working on last year but never quite completed. It's not the greatest but it's too special of a season to not share with you all; it's a short life and you only get to live it once. Merry Christmas!

gene just put up a recording of "in a stable" featuring the st columbas girls national school choir. it was recorded on a tape recorder, and the drum machine and synthy bits were not my idea.
it adds to the magic i guess.
enjoy, and happy holidays

Indeed, they did. I've had this playing in my office all day. Connington, I really enjoyed what you offered. Can you give some background on that?

yea, sure. both of my sisters attend this school. well, actually it's an amalgamation of three schools, although there are three different buildings.........st columbas boys, st columbas girls and our ladys school for the hearing impaired.
many moons ago i attended the boys school and when i moved on to your equivalent of high school, i worked as a volunteer phys ed coach in the hearing impaired building. there was one student who had minimal hearing (something like 10%), who really wanted to learn to play guitar, and i said i'd teach him. it was without a doubt one of the most rewarding things i have ever done, in fact, about a year ago i saw him play live in a venue for three hundred people, and he rocked the joint, and also dedicated his set to me, which is always nice.
it was through this guy that the girls school asked me to come in for the christmas carol service, which is performed to an audience of parents. i said i'd love to, and i've been playing guitar for the last three years for them. i just thought piano would work better with that particular song because i'm not very good and wouldn't be able to distract from the vocals even if i wanted to.
this year they decided to record a collection of the carols and donate all proceeds to a charity of my choice. so amnesty got about 3 grand from the recording, and lots of people got copies of a really beautiful christmassy collection.
i might add that the caretaker (janitor) of the girls school did a beautiful a capella carol as a last track. mr philpott is 84 years old, and everybody loves him.
for insurance purposes the girls can't run in the yard, but the teachers tell them it's because they might knock mr philpott over, and they're only too happy to oblige them.
it was a real treat working with him, and the girls of course. i wasn't fond of christmas before i started doing this, but i have to admit, it's growing on me, and i'm looking forward to next year already.
hope that's enough history for you..........
and i'm glad you enjoyed the track.
merry christmas.

Thanks for sharing that. Your cork obsession not withstanding, you're a good guy. That is a moving story, and the song is my very favorite on the Soundhole 2007 Christmas thing.
