You can leave your hat on. You can leave your hat on. You can leave your hat on. You can leave your hat on.

I think this is a form of hat speech.

I love hats. I don't look good in them, but I wear them sometimes anyway. I wish the classic fedora would make a comeback so I'd have an excuse to buy a couple.

You can’t be self conscious with a hat, you have to own it. We are supposed to wear cowboy hats in our Patsy band. I feel like such a dork wearing one. I did feel comfortable in a pork pie in our songs of the depression show. ![](http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/terken1/5790E095-D6B5-4600-B18E-0E8B5B26E2F0_zpsjelprt7o.jpeg)

The fedora is a classic and therefore has never gone entirely out of fashion. Though its adoption by Indiana Jones wannabes and PUAs (pickup artists) may have given it a bad smell among some folk. I've worn a fedora for decades, starting with one that my mother-in-law found in an attic--a really good German high-crown beaver-felt that I had reconditioned by a south-side Chicago hatter. I've acquired quite a few, new and old, since then, though I don't wear them as much as I once did. (In the winter especially, a wool eight-quarter cap, preferably with earflaps, is more practical.)
The trick to wearing a fedora (not to be confused with a trilby) is to get one that fits properly, so it doesn't look, as my dad used to say, like a pimple on a pincusion. And if you have a large head, don't go for a trilby or one of those stingy-brim jobs.

The classic fedora did make a comeback. I have a few of them. When you have as little hair as I’ve had, for as long as I haven’t had it, you get tired of ball caps. Here's the one you want: www.sids-clothing.com/Products/Stetson-Roadster-Dress-Hat__Roads.aspxThen you take it to a hat guy and have the front brim turned slightly upward: ...not that I've given much thought to this.

I look dorky in any kind of hat, but thinning hair and sun and rain necessitate frequent wearing of baseball caps, preferably plain, 'cuz my head is not advertising space.
I also have a decent broad-brim hat, similar to a Tilley but cheaper, useful for hiking in the rain, and a really dorky floppy-brim hat with a chin strap for kayak outings.

I usually wear a baseball cap but I do have two fedoras. A nice airy woven one and a light green felt. The woven one is my favorite and is great for blocking the sun and letting air through at the same time. The band is wrong but otherwise this is pretty close to mine. ![](https://www.villagehatshop.com/photos/product/giant/4511390S118921/alt/118921.jpg)

I generally go for the revolutionary Castro hat. But in summer I’ll go witha a funky mesh ball cap, for cooler air flow.
I take my cap off a while while golfing. I don’t want a totally white head. A little color looks healthier.

I take my cap off a while while golfing. I take it off when I brush my teeth. Otherwise I can't get any toothpaste out of the tube.

Here's one that Bob Wills wore, now ensconced at the Country Music Hall of Fame.
My daughter and I wear these when we go riding. The landscape in this photo is one of the reasons I'd like to live in the Shenandoah Valley someday.

I was already familiar with the Village Hat Shop, but I have to say that Sid's has a really impressive range. I especially like the variety of 8/4 caps. David Morgan in Seattle has some nice hats as well, but they're mostly outdoorsy items--Tilley, Akubra, and such. (Though the Akubra Stylemaster fedora looks remarkably like my old German hat.)
As handy as the internet is for getting an idea of what's available, I have to say that there's no substitute for a place where you can try on the candidates to see not only how they look but how they fit. I no longer need most of what's on offer at Heimie's Haberdashery in St. Paul, but it's a real time capsule (deliberately redesigned as such). I walked in a couple years back and found exactly the kind of roll-up fedora I'd been searching for since the 1970s. Got it at a last-one-left discount, too.

I also have many guitar oriented caps. I have a nice Hoffman Guitars hat, Martin, Gibson, National, and music store hats, guitar string hats and others. That said, I hate hats. I hate wearing them and I hate how I look in one. When I see someone wearing a hat/cap inside, I want to hit them with a rock. I wear a hat, if I have to, in the winter to stay warm. I wear one, if I have to, in the summer to not get burned.
