SNOPES is an undercover agency run by CIA. (No, it isn't. I made that up. Don't put it on Facebook. You can put up my research indicating that Trump was in fact born on Pluto and raised as a child by an illiterate tribe of baboons.) I bet the CIA forced you to make that denial. True story: When Trump went around spreading the birther nonsense about Obama being born in Kenya, Bill Maher started saying Trump's father was an orangutan. Trumps lawyers sued, denying that(though it WOULD explain the weird skin coloring.) They introduced, as evidence, Trumps birth certificate to disprove the claim, as if the certificate would have actually said MOTHER: Mary Anne MacLeod FATHER: Orangutan if it were true. The judge threw the case out.

... One thing: a vaccine is in development, and should be ready and available by next year. Gotta get through this year, obviously, but that’s some good news. Well, I hope you're right. Covid 19 might be pegged that easily. On the other hand, in terms of vaccine it might be more similar to ebola, or HIV. The ebola vaccine is something that has been worked on for decades, and it has only just been approved. And an HIV vaccine? Hep C? Those are too variable and mutate too quickly--hep C and HIV to an extent (although there are other difficulties with HIV). And vaccine safety--you have to be sure that you’re not infecting anyone with the virus (oops!) or causing something really undesirable with a live-attenuated vaccine. Most are not now dead/live-attenuated, instead they're custom designed by microbiologists/gene scientists to mimic something about the virus (an antigen), kind of tricking your body's immune response to do what it should do when it encounters the virus. Designing and getting that custom molecule right is what it's all about. Which is easier to do for some viruses than others. So ready next year? Hopefully, and fingers crossed. www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3052495/coronavirus-far-more-likely-sars-bond-human-cells-scientists-say edit: japan has just decided to close all schools for the next month or so. Later March is the usual (formal) end of the school year, so it's really only for 2-3 weeks, with the new year starting in april. I wonder if there will be any delays when that time comes around. And US/korea usual spring military exercises have also been cancelled due to positive tests among both groups. (In WWI the flu was transmitted by and killed a lot of soldiers.)

Yeah, if it's still around in early November, maybe the election should be delayed?!? Or maybe Pence will have prayed it away by then, like he did with indiana's HIV disaster?

The cruise ships are public knowledge. I wonder if anyone would hear about it if one or another warship had a similar outbreak (regardless of country)?

The flu season usually dissipates once summer comes around. That's what Japan is hoping for with the Olympics coming up.

To get a scary handle on what global pandemics can involve, read The Great Influenza. A pandemic that required inventing new methods of treatment.

A new case from California. No recent travel. The Japanese have closed all schools for a month.

I just got another email from HP. My computer has just left the Fed Ex facility in Chongquing, China and will arrive March 3d.
Good news, China is still working. Bad news, I suppose I will have to quarantine it for a week.
Maybe I should have the cat open the box, just in case. Have there been any reports of computer to cat to people transmissions?

Coming from China it probably has viruses pre-installed. Aaaaand, with that, we may as well close the internet early and take the day off. Bruce wins the interwebs for today.

Well, I hope you're right. Covid 19 might be pegged that easily. To be clear, it’s not me that would be right. I doubt if there is anyone on this forum who has less medical expertise than me.

To give another perspective, a doctor friend of ours says in the medical community he has talked to, they believe that the percentage of deaths being reported is probably extremely exaggerated. The reason being that most people who get the virus just feel like they have the flu for the most part. People being people, they don’t want to go to the doctor, especially if it means getting tagged as having the virus and needing to go into quarantine and pausing their lives. So, actual number of peopled infected is much higher, so percentage of deaths is less.
As to China controlling the message? You bet your ass they’re good at it. They control the internet completely. It’s firewalled. There were proxies that could be used to get out, but I’m pretty sure they’ve figured out how to control those as well. The primary social media networks have every single message scanned by government. They disappear people on a regular basis for getting out of line. Could that control be 100 percent? Probably not. But what would the average person know? Unless the corpses are stacked in the street, they’re not going to have a feel for exactly how bad it is.
