The weird thing about this cold snap is, I can't imagine summer. . . , A friend is in Florida for a couple weeks. He posted some pictures on fb. It looks like another planet. I just can't imagine being outside in anything but a thermal outfit. I walk past the motorcycle in the garage to get to my car. And it looks like a space ship from another planet. I can't imagine ever wanting to ride on it.
Very strange feeling. Depressing. We go nowhere. We do nothing. Some of the bars I've gone to in the past are open on a limited basis. Even some open mics. Of course, COVID is still a concern. But moreover, it's so fricking cold outside, plus and inch or so of new snow falls every night, so who wants to venture out on the roads.
It's damned depressing.

If we want to go anywhere the car needs to be warmed up for a few minutes first, getting in a freezing car and just going is no fun what so ever. The seat heaters work much faster in DaWife's new KIA than my old Ford and heated seats are must in this kind of weather unless you have a semi heated garage or are willing to run the car for a half hour before leaving. I remember days of old when that didn't matter as much but it sure as hell does now.

A shot of bourbon, a good sounding acoustic guitar, and pretty soon an hour or two passes. Life can be worse.

I find the cold & snow pretty depressing, too. I don’t have to go anywhere but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to. Snow, icicles, cold, more snow. Ugh! I keep telling myself it is almost March so things will change. Imagine how it would feel if this was only December.

Oh yes, a man without a can of Cold Start was a lost man. One could ruin a engine in one or two winters but that stuff made the fucker start.

I do NOT miss those days in St. Paul at all. I never owned a car with seat heaters. Our butts toughed it out.

Remember the days when your back seat was full of aerosol ether bombs? And if you were smart, a bottle of HEET, too. We cast an actor from Baton Rouge in a show, and he had never been in a winter before. We told him so much shit about climbing out 2nd story windows in the snow drifts to go start your car every two hours all night long, and no matter how much we piled on he believed every bit it. Until somebody told him to pour HEET in the tank so the gas wouldn't freeze, and then he knew we were lying. The one true thing we told him.

Oh, and I hate it when I get in somebody's car and they put the seat heater on. Real quickly I become sweaty and uncomfortable. Our cars sit in the garage. It's not heated except 2 walls abut the house and there's a bedroom over the top, so it's not as cold as outside until you open the garage doors. But soda pop left in the garage will freeze and rupture the can. Beer seems to do quite fine.

Also my first with leather seats, have always preferred cloth. Now I wonder how I survived (although a hot black leather seat in summertime can be a bitch).

I remember a cold New Year's Eve party my folks had when I was a kid. It was one of those -40 New Years Eves that seemed to occur far more frequently than the odds would suggest. As was standard practice back then, on a super cold night, your car battery came along with you into the house. That night, our hallway was lined with winter boots and car batteries.
Headbolt and tank heaters were GREAT inventions.

My Buick Envision has not only heated seats, but also a heated steering wheel! I love it.

It’s actually gone below freezing here! It’s going to snow! 😎
Which is damned cold for Vancouver. The wind has been howling for a couple of days as well. Nice today, just cold. Our winters are bad enough, being grey and wet. I couldnn’t do eastern winters.

Electric cars will have a small gasoline engine under each seat to provide warmth.

I haven't been on skis in many many days. The snow is there, and I could dress my body for these temps, but I don't want to breathe the air so rapidly when it's below zero. Just plain hurts.

I used to bike in sub zero weather in my younger days but figured out I always got sick. Skiing not quite as bad.
I think the cold air and breathing hard paralyses the cilia in your upper respiratory tract and they can’t keep that reverse flow going to get rid of pathogens. I could be all wrong.

Associated Press CABLE, Wis. — The American Birkebeiner Ski Race in northern Wisconsin will look different this year because of coronavirus safety protocols. Organizers of the event, promoted as North America's largest and longest cross-country ski race, have stretched it from a single day to five days from Feb. 24-28. Last year about 11,000 skiers participated in the race, which can draw as many 30,000 spectators. This year, organizers are expecting fewer than 5,000 skiers to race in person with no spectators allowed. The race's executive director, Ben Popp, says the event usually attracts skiers from across the globe, but this year the majority of participants will be coming from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. The course has also been changed this year and will begin and end in Cable rather than downtown Hayward. That eliminates the need for busing skiers between the two communities and avoids close contacts. "I feel like we've created a medium for people to be able to come participate in the event safely," Popp tells Wisconsin Public Radio. Race organizers say those who participate are expected to physically distance from others, remain in their household bubble, opt for takeout or food delivery while in the area, and follow masking guidelines. They have also encouraged people to bring their own water bottles and no food will be provided within aid stations. Skiers are also being asked to take a COVID-19 test within five days of coming to the area and take part virtually if they test positive. Race organizers acknowledge the concerns of health officials, but they feel holding the race with safety protocols is better than having none at all, Popp said. The race generates millions of dollars in spending for the region each winter. Melissa Jordan, president of the Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce, said it's been a tough year for businesses during the pandemic. "I think that our members really need this," said Jordan. "I mean, they've been fortunate enough to pull through in 2020. But, it's tough that there have been changes to the race this year. I think the changes are for the better ... But with that being said, I still think that our businesses really rely on this event to get them through the winter."

When it's this cold and it's a weekend I wake up, look at the clock, shut the alarm off and go back to bed.
