What the heck. I'm going on Friday and Saturday. Marshall went last year and didn't hate it. Plus I get to see Jorma Kaukonen in concert and fondle a bunch of guitars I could never afford. And I get to see Paul Heumiller again - when he and I went to a guitar camp together he was just a guy who liked nice guitars (and played them very well); now he owns www.dreamguitars.com. And, I get to see John Thomas again - once again, a person who won't remember ever meeting me, but I have a feeling his talk, "The Mortal Guitar Lover: Of Life, Music, and Legacy" will be poignant. John, the author of "Kalamazoo Gals" and a frequent contributor to the Fretboard Journal, has stage IV prostate cancer and his treatment options appear to have narrowed. fretboardsummit.org/

Boy, I’d love to go again. Too many wonderful guitars and performances. But I’m just not up to the travel anymore.

I have never heard of any of those people. You have, you just aren't making the connection. Tommy Emanuel and Bob Minner videos have been posted here. Jorma Kaukonen was a founder of Jefferson Airplane ( One pill makes you larger…) and Hot Tuna. The makers' names have been discussed here as well.

I have never heard of any of those people. Todd, "Marshall" is the guy from Chicago who used to come to IdiotJam. He has a lot of letters in his last name but he plays guitar and sings well. Writes his own stuff, too.

Ok, but:
Jorma Kaukonen. No. Paul Heumiller. No. John Thomas. No.
Tommy Emanuel drives me nuts.

Todd, you have never heard of the band called Jefferson Airplane?

Ok, but: Jorma Kaukonen. No. Paul Heumiller. No. John Thomas. No. Tommy Emanuel drives me nuts. Jorma's the guy on guitar. Jorma's the guy on guitar. Jorma's still the guy on guitar. Paul Heumiller owns the guitar website filled with guitars I will never be able to afford. I brought his name up because I have hung out with him before, not because I expected anyone to know his name. But I think he co-owns it with Al Petteway, whose name you might know. www.dreamguitars.comJohn Thomas is an attorney, law professor, writer, guitarist, and bicyclist. He wrote this book. I shared a cab with him back in 2010 at the Harp Guitar Gathering; once again, "guys John has met" is not a popular Jeopardy category. kalamazoogals.com/kalamazoogals.com/the-author/

He is an accomplished acoustic guitarist and has, or did have, his own guitar camp called Fur Peace. Paul Heumiller co-owns Dream Guitars, a boutique guitar shop. Google it. John Thomas is an author & collector. He wrote a great book called Kalamazoo Gals about the women who built Gibsons during WWII. kalamazoogals.com/

We’ll cool JohnB. I plan on going. We’ll have to hook up.
I haven’t decided what day. I just like to walk around and try out fancy guitars. There are some really cool instruments you’ll never see anywhere else. I picked up a fan fret and played a little on it. The luthier watched me like a Hawk. Said it was already sold for $25k. Very nice guitar. Brazilian Rosewood, of course.
Played many other very nice instruments.
Fun.
I sat in on an interview with Molly Tuttle. .

I'll be there both days that are available (Friday and Saturday) and will be staying in Skokie, because it's available and cheaper than a lot of other alternatives (with free parking). I might try to track one or the other house my mom lived in from 1989-1992, before moving to Buffalo Grove. I'll actually be driving up on Thursday, so Marshall, if there's something going on Thursday night up in your neck of the woods I might be able to come up.
And LJ, I'd love to meet you in person on Saturday as well. I'll be driving back on Sunday. Part of the appeal of this weekend is that Erin can have the house to herself for a while, so she wants me out of the way for as long as possible.

My Thursday night open mic options are a loooonnnnggggg ways away from Skokie and OTSFM. Though let me conjure it a little.
We can do a Soundhole lunch or something on Saturday, maybe. There are plenty of places close to OTSFM.
For yucks, Bruce Roper, the luthier/musician/recording engineer who built my Nick Lucas, is the repair guy for OTSFM. He doesn't pay to have a booth in the east building where the high end luthiers set up shop. But last year he hung out in the OTSFM music store and had a handful of his guitars there along with the regular stuff on the walls in the store. I expect he'll be there again. He's a good guy.
PS - JohnB. While you're there, you should swing by Chicago Music Exchange. It's a big guitar store and it's probably a mile from OTSFM at the most. Also interesting is Guitar Works in Evanston, which is right next to Skokie.

Of course, maybe it makes you decide NOT to choose Saturday. Anyway, I did an all access for the 26th. 😊
