Happy birthday to the USA, land that I love. We don't have any celebration planned. For years we'd spend the evening of the 4th in a high rise watching fireworks. The couple who owned the high rise moved to North Carolina.
Zoom breakfast, groceries, hunkering down in the heat. Enjoy your day.

It's hot and muggy here in northern Indiana. Pretty much what you'd expect on July 4th. We took a short walk early to beat the heat. Then we let IceSha play in her wading pool. I cut the metal end off of one of the hoses so she can play with it as it fills the pool. Dogs seem to know how to enjoy simple pleasures.
Speaking of simple pleasures, I'm going to retrieve my guitar and play in the back yard. I nearly have my new Gentle On My Mind under my fingers.
Happy fourth!

Looks like rain. No PT today-yay! Still have exercises to do, though. I have a guitar that needs a nut repair/replacement so I am looking for a competent repairman. Konkoly retired so my trips to Elderly’s repair shop are probably on hold. It’s a lot farther away than it used to be! I may have settled on the guy at Tobias Music. Do you know him, Marshall? Coffee time.

Good morning. Tonight will be my dog Dax's least favorite evening of the year. Took him out last night and one firecracker went off in the distance and he was "get me out of here"! We're going down to Kelly's for a family BBQ this afternoon. Like Dax, we're not big on fireworks so we'll probably just go to ground at home this evening. Have a great day folks.

Heat index 115, wall of water outside. 82 at dawn. Filipinos will be right at home.

Good morning.
63F-78F rain.
No fireworks shows tonight as more rain is predicted after sundown. That won't stop the locals from firing off everything they can get their hands on. Last night's 10pm fireworks lasted until 11pm with bangs and booms until midnight.
We'll have a lazy afternoon of good company and wine at the Radtke's and some grilled goodies.

Count me as anti-fireworks too. I simply do not understand the fascination with blowing stuff up.
Watching the Tour. Saw Cavindish get his 35th stage win yesterday, breaking Eddy Merckx’s all time record for stage wins. Was a thing of beauty to watch. He made it look easy, and it is anything but that. At 40 years old, racing against riders half his age. It’s been a great tour so far. Looking at the rest of the coming stages there are some brutal climbs coming. A lot can happen. Stay tuned.
The heat arrives in the PNW today. Getting into the 90’s today, into the ,100’s for the weekend. Time to do stuff early, then hide from the heat of the day.

Good morning. Wishing everyone a meaningful Independence Day...

Be careful with those fireworks.

New meaning to hot 'n muggy here today! Heat index 115, wall of water outside. 82 at dawn. Filipinos will be right at home. Yesterday I learned about Wet Bulb Globe Temperature. "The wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) is a measure of environmental heat as it affects humans. Unlike a simple temperature measurement, WBGT accounts for all four major environmental heat factors: air temperature, humidity, radiant heat (from sunlight or sources such as furnaces), and air movement (wind or ventilation). It is used by industrial hygienists, athletes, sporting events and the military to determine appropriate exposure levels to high temperatures. "In hot areas, some US military installations display a flag to indicate the heat category based on the WBGT. The military publishes guidelines for water intake and physical activity level for acclimated and unacclimated individuals in different uniforms based on the heat category. The University of Georgia adapted these categories for use in college sports as a guideline for how strenuous practices can be." Category | WBGT (°F) | WBGT (°C) | Flag color | 1 | ≤ 78–81.9 | ≤ 25.6–27.7 | White | 2 | 82–84.9 | 27.8–29.4 | Green | 3 | 85–87.9 | 29.5–31.0 | Yellow | 4 | 88–89.9 | 31.1–32.1 | Red | 5 | ≥ 90 | ≥ 32.2 | Black |
At 5:00 today, Baton Rouge's WGBT is forecasted to be 89. STAY INSIDE, theevan!

Happy 4th of July. I think back to July 4th, 1976. I spent that special day in Tehran, Iran.
A quiet day for me today.

Hoosiers blow up a lot of money in fireworks. They love those loud booms and colorful displays. A couple of nights ago, in Griffith, IN, a Hoosier Backyard Explosion Lover had a slight mishap. What was supposed to be a lovely display of fiery colors went wrong. 7 people were injured, 4 homes and 10 automobiles were damaged. Minor mishap. Kind of screwed up the barbecue and fireworks display, though. We can sit in the backyard and watch several displays that rival any town or city for pyrotechnics. Many, many, dollars get all blowed up real good. The next day, people check their yards for fingers. Watch at least the first minute and a half of this.
Why is it I envision lawsuits a’ pop pin’?

Happy 4th of July. I think back to July 4th, 1976. I spent that special day in Tehran, Iran. A quiet day for me today. I was in Lawrence, KS. I'm on the left, my brother Mark on the right. We had special "colonial" costumes my mother made for us. My dad was maybe not as good of a photographer as Howard's dad. Or Howard's dog.

Happy 4th of July. I think back to July 4th, 1976. I spent that special day in Tehran, Iran. A quiet day for me today.
That day I had sailed from Westport, CT, to New York harbor to see the tall ships. I accompanied a family friend who was the owner of a 19' Lightning. No other fully grown adult friends would go with him, just 22-year-old Howard. It was quite the adventure, caught in a storm one afternoon, putting in at Portchester for a broken shackle pin, cruising down the East River under sail (very small motor!), mooring between Pier 4 and Pier 5 on the Brooklyn shore of the East River.
And sailing back to Westport again! We were on the water for four days. Kind of gives you a fresh perspective on what travel must have been like in days of yore. I came back from that trip totally bronzed—and that, boys and girls, is why I have regular screenings with the dermatologist now.
This is a Lightning:

Happy 4th of July. I think back to July 4th, 1976. I spent that special day in Tehran, Iran. A quiet day for me today. Let's see, that was the summer I was working at the Leader-Smellogram in Eau Claire and I got my Blue Angels ride, unforgettable. I graduated from college in December of that year, started on the Milwaukee Sentinel in January 1977.

I can barely recall 1976. I know I was working two jobs and going to night classes for my Master’s degree. I didn’t have time for boat rides or dressing up funny. Well, dressing up funny, maybe.
