Cold, gloomy, sad day. I think I'll make a trip down to the Amanas today, I need to get out, get some fresh air and have a change of scenery.

My deepest sympathy. I spent quite a bit of time visiting with Don at one of the IJ gatherings. His life was the most interesting story. I also remember him telling me that I should learn to fingerpick, I got a long way to go on that.

A beef roast in the crock pot. I've had a great deal of difficulty finding buttercup squash this fall, finally found some on Wednesday, so I'll have baked squash for dinner tonight with the roast.
Gave my grandson a guitar on Thanksgiving, hope I can keep him interested, he has taken piano and fiddle lessons so he knows something about music basics.

About a moth ago, I signed up to be a Salvation Army bell ringer on December 2nd. I was hoping that the weather wouldn't be too cold and nasty then, but you can't predict a month ahead.
Well today's the day, my bell ringing duty is from noon to 2:00 PM, and the forecast is for a temperature of 54 degrees. Should be fun.

On November 26th, my granddaughter competed in an Irish dance competition, Mid-America Oireahtas, in Chicago. This competition is to determined qualifications for both 2022 North American championships and World championships. Ella qualified, and will be competing in the North American championships in Montreal, next July and in the World competition in in Belfast, Ireland next April. As an added bonus Ella has also been invited, and will compete in the All Ireland Championships in Killarney, Ireland in Feb. Ella has a dance studio in Madison, where she teaches Irish dance to younger kids, in cooperation with the school she trains at, Bellator Academy of Irish Dance, in Milwaukee. Several of her students also qualified for the North American competition, so Ella will be going there as a competitor and as a teacher. A lot of really, really hard work on her part, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA in school. BTW she's 16 years old. I can't read the label on the box she is holding. Bailey's Irish Cream or Jameson's? Ha ha, if it would have been Bailey's I would have taken it! Instead of a trophy she got an Irish vase, very light green with darker green shamrocks, quite lovely.

I once served as arbitrator in a case where a coffee expert testified. He explained why keeping the coffee on a heating element causes the flavor to deteriorate quickly. So I got a Black & Decker coffee maker that puts the brewed coffee into a carafe. It stays plenty hot. The flavor holds up much better. I've stuck with this variety for over a decade now. I have one of those at the cabin. Problem is, the pot is usually empty before I can really tell if it's getting cold. I'll admit, it does taste good while it lasts.

Donuts are good, but I don't have any, I had an orange instead. Having an orange with your morning coffee is just not the same as a donut.
Gig yesterday went well, they want us back in January.
Today, since the temp will be in the upper 50s, with wind from the S or SW, I shall go to the cabin and blow leaves. It's mostly a fire prevention thing, I want to get them away from the cabin and other buildings, just in case.

The lake here, south central Wisconsin, is frozen over with the exception of a small area on the north end of the lake.
We'll be celebrating Thanksgiving today, Turkey and all the fixings, late this afternoon.

The lake is covered with a layer of ice this morning. Oldest grandson just left to go skiing, Tyrol opens today.
SIL and I are watching a live stream of Mid-america Oireachtas from Chicago. Granddaughter will be dancing shortly.
One dog is sleeping on the couch, the other is sleeping on the floor.

Chilly, overcast morning. I'll be heading out, to Cedar Rapids, soon, to pick up our fresh Turkey, then back home to make cranberry sauce. While the cranberry sauce cools I'll run to Vinton, to Fareway, to pick up some additional grilling meat, and a few other things. Laundry and pack tonight, Wisconsin tomorrow.

In other entertainment news, Leo Kottke, who has traditionally played a show at the Guthrie Theater every year around Thanksgiving, this year is playing three nights in a row at the downtown Dakota jazz club, and with a percussionist, Dave King. Kinda hard to imagine. Dave King was performing with Leo last week in Stoughton. I thought it worked pretty well.

Up. Out of Kona coffee. Switched to the Kauai grown coffee, it’s not as good. Oh well. Today we will go down to Poipu to site see, beach time, look for turtles, and Bernekee’s for dinner with the rest of the family. And that’s the day. Mike Have you been to Anini beach/park? Just east of Princeville. That was one of our favorites, seldom people there, nice sand beach and rocky on either end, which was good for snorkeling. Saw a 4-5 ft shark there one day while snorkeling.

It's sunny outside, but chilly. My bike ride yesterday turned out to be a 33+ miler, longer than I had planned but it was just too nice out to quit. For some reason I don't seem to have much energy today.

The forecast here is for a high of 53 degrees this afternoon and the wind is supposed to be near zero. Given that, and the fact that there are no more 50 degrees forecast through the end of the month, I'm going to try to get in a bike ride. Probably won't be too long, somewhere between 12 and 20 miles.

Waiting on Darryl (Paleo) to arrive. He is in the Milwaukee area visiting his daughter and her family. A while back I suggested to him that whenever he is in the area to come and take a look at some of Lar’s recording equipment. I know Darryl does a lot of recording and I have absolutely no use for (or understanding of) any of it. Some things are still in the original packaging. Lar bought new stuff to use when he recorded, “Cottonwoods !!.” Sigh... Some things I will never part with, i.e., his guitars. They meant the world to him and they have great sentimental value to me. The other stuff has to go. Darryl is getting first pick. My friend Bryan (concertina player) also records music. He is coming this weekend. After that I am not sure how to unload the rest of the stuff. I have four Fender amps. I have the impression guitar players like those but I don’t want strangers coming to my home to look at them. I’m open to suggestions. I am very much looking forward to seeing Darryl but, I have to admit, it’s kind of bittersweet. I have been thinking of all of the fun and good times the three of us shared in Iowa and here in Wisconsin when he visited his family. I always enjoyed when Darryl would send Lar Mp3’s of his original music and Lar would write the chords for me so he and I could play along with Darryl’s recordings. I miss that. I miss a lot of things. I officially retired from Occupational Therapy in October (my 60th birthday). I was a bit nervous about doing that but now have no regrets. My days are filled with learning and practicing new music and creating art. My new occupations are now Musician/Artist. I am already booked for music shows next summer and will be doing a number of art/craft shows throughout the year. In between all of that I still take weekly horseback riding lessons and volunteer at the horse therapy ranch and with the USO. Life is good. Have a great day everyone. Jan What a great way to spend a day, visiting, making music and reminiscing with you Jan, thank you for thinking of me. I will always treasure the items that used to be a part of Lar's life, now entrusted to my care. Like you and many others, I miss him dearly.
