I really enjoy having Merlin along on my walks in the woods, but I'm skeptical that in the span of 200 yards I really heard Chestnut-sided, Nashville, Tennessee, and Cape May warblers. I'm guessing the most common to Indiana has a call that sounds like the other three. But maybe not. Maybe Indiana is the warbler melting pot of the bird world. Good morning. Back from a morning mountain bike ride at the Weeki Wachi preserve. I'm at a nice level of tiredness so it must have been a good ride. :- It's the height of spring migration so it's highly likely Merlin was correct in it's id's. We were able to positively id 10 warbler species at our Fort Desoto outing and there were many more species, but some were just too shy and quick for a positive id. I've got some shopping to do, and the Hernando Audubon chapter is having our annual picnic this evening. Have a great day Soundholians!

Good morning. Not much going on here and that's a good thing. Rest and recovery after yesterday's birding and bike riding. Have a great day. Haven't seen it, but I think I've heard it. Unique bird call. Supposedly, there might be an ivory-billed woodpecker in the vicinity of our camp in Mississippi. The forest service comes out to a particular tree from time to time to monitor. I'm sworn to secrecy. They don't want hordes of watchers to descend on the place. And they need certain confirmation. This is a photo I took of a pileated woodpecker last week. They are almost identical in appearance and size so there is a huge potential for incorrect id's. BTW, I've seen the videos and all you can see are silhouettes. I don't see how they can get an id off of them, but I'm not an expert. Meanwhile, I changed my mind and went on a bike ride at the Weeki Wachi preserve, I guess I'm just incorrigable.

Back from the Chassahowitzka WMA. Very long, very good ride. I didn't get to nearly all of the parts of the WMA but that's just that much more to explore. Glorious weather right now, summer looms but for the moment I'm not going to think about it........ I'm exhausted but well satisfied.

Good morning. Up early for a mountain bike ride at the Chassahowitzka WMA. There are miles of dirt roads and trails to explore there, more than a days' worth of riding so today I'll do the northern half and I'll go there at another time to do the southern half. Claire's heading out to a baby shower for one of Kelly's friends so it's a busy day here in Florida. Have a great day folks.

Back from my morning birding. It was a day for woodpeckers, we saw downy, hairy, red-headed and piliated woodpeckers. Went first to the Chinsegut WEA with the Audubon folks and on the way home stopped I stopped at the Fickett Hammock Preserve for a solo hike. Got the picture of the pileated woodpecker there as well as some pictures of some impressive old growth live oaks. One of my favorite trees. They have extremely hard wood that was used to build the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides). Live oak as well as some innovative double hull bracing made the ship as unsinkable as it was. The Brits during the war of 1812 had an undercover mission to Florida to acquire live oak saplings that they planned to use eventually on their ships. Ironclads put an end to that long term operation...... Pictures in the photo section if you're interested.
