A riff, in the context of rock and roll, is a repetitive line that defines the song. You can call a one off line a riff. You can say "riffing" in the context of improvisation. But in this context, Stairway does NOT cut it, and Mike is CLEARLY out of bounds, and Marshall is A BAD MAN for supporting him.
Go to your rooms. Listen to Inna Gada Da Vida 110 times, so you get an idea of what a repetitive riff really is.

Not a riff, but like "Honeysuckle Rose," remarkable for the way it plays all around the melody.

They may call it the Hi Ho Silver song or the Lone Ranger song but it's remembered.

Whole Lotta Love.
Arguably, Bo Diddley's I'm A Man set the groundwork for a lot of future rock and roll.

Knocking off "Stairway" as the bane of every guitar store everywhere.

The guitar solo from Stairway is the very definition of a riff, and is obviously the best one ever, narrowly edging out Loan Me a Dime, by Boz and Duane. Anyone who disagrees is a clay brained troll. Hie thee unto Indiana, where clay is kneaded into pleasing shapes. (Of course, it is then put into a very hot oven, so you might want to consider not getting the whole treament.)
