A riff, in the context of rock and roll, is a repetitive line that defines the song. You can call a one off line a riff. You can say "riffing" in the context of improvisation. But in this context, Stairway does NOT cut it, and Mike is CLEARLY out of bounds, and Marshall is A BAD MAN for supporting him. Go to your rooms. Listen to Inna Gada Da Vida 110 times, so you get an idea of what a repetitive riff really is. Bull fecies. The guitar solo from Stairway is the very definition of a riff, and is obviously the best one ever, narrowly edging out Loan Me a Dime, by Boz and Duane. Anyone who disagrees is a clay brained troll. Mike Pfffffffffffffffffffft. (Clay brained troll noise.)

Well thank goodness for Paul. I was just passing by, first time in many moons, and thought I might have to post. Whew. That was close for all of us. But page two?

It probably is, Mac, but Whole Lotta Love is still my favorite.

Satisfaction Hands down the most recognizable riff in Rock n Roll. I'd argue that the first notes of Dylan's Hwy 61 Revisited are as recognizable as anything in Rock and Roll. Mike

Well Satisfaction ain't my favorite either but that wasn't the question. The question was BEST riff, not favorite riff.

Well, this is a little Johnny B. Goode, but it sure is recognizable.

Not a riff but back in the early 70's Bill Staines had a little signature chord we all liked. He came to Minneapolis and we all went to see how he did it. Little did we know he played upside down and backwards.

Well if it idn't my ol' friend Don T. Fret?! Silly Potter! Tis I, Badger Tom. Hard to keep these interweb aliases separate, eh ... er ... huh? Now all I need to figure out is whether badger is a noun, adjective or verb.

Satisfaction is the most recognizable riff from OUR generation. Been a few more over the years.
Oh yes, Peter - Ozzy - Crazy Train. Now, that's a riff. Gets played in Hockey Arenas all over North America in breaks between play.

Little did we know he played upside down and backwards. If we are distilling it down to a chord, than the opening of "A Hard Days Night" must surely get honorable mention. Mike

For the last few years, stadia in many parts of the world have been full of people chanting the Seven Nation Army riff by The White Stripes. Happily, it seems to be fading a little now.

In order to be considered "best" it must be instantly recognizable by a large percentage of the population. Many of these don't come close if they were played to a random audience.
