In order to be considered "best" it must be instantly recognizable by a large percentage of the population. Many of these don't come close if they were played to a random audience. That's why I chose the Lone Ranger Theme.

That's why I chose the Lone Ranger Theme. I'm probably the last generation that even recognizes that that was a show much less remembering the theme song.

Well, how about the first 8 notes of Beethoven's 5th? People would know it, though how many would know it was Beethoven's fifth symphony, I don't know.

I still don't think anyone can top "Satisfaction" for overall riffiness -- the song is timeless, a huge seller, and the riff continues throughout the song, not just periodically, plus the vocal melody parallels the riff.

Lucille is another one...but I'd say it's a toss up between Satisfaction and Day Tripper, thus renewing the Beatles Stones rivalry.
