I was looking at videos of Doyle Dykes with his new signature Godin Mutiac steel. Very nice wider neck (than the typical 1.687) steel Godin with an improved pickup system. But I just can’t get past the fact that they emblazoned the headstock with Doyles name. I don’t dislike the guy and he plays very well, I just don’t want a guitar with somebody elses name on it. Am I being too anal about such things?

Well, I own 2 John Pisano signature Eastmans (and I'm not THAT big a fan of his music). The signature is small and unassuming but also has his trademark tree frog inlay.
Remember, if you really like the guitar, since it is black, a small strip of electrical tape and no one will see his name on it!

A little sanding and some black superglue, you'll never know it was there.

I own a Gibson Herb Ellis ES-165. Didn't buy it for the signature, just the playability and sound.

Just acquired an Eric Clapton 000-28 with a shade top burst. Almost didn’t buy it because of the name in the fretboard. But take away the endorsement and it meets every feature I prefer in a guitar. So, swallowed my pride and bought it. No regrets.

The fear I have is that there appears to be little to no resale value to these. A few years ago I found a Breedlove 12-string signature guitar for Richard Gilwitz. I don’t like Richards music, but his gutar came with a jumbo body, all solid wood spruce and rosewood and included the LR Baggs mag/mic pickup. It had what I wanted but included an gross looking 12th fret inlay of Richards design. At the time, dealers were dumping the 100 or so made at $2K each. Today those guitar are lucky to fetch $875. I think what I’ll do is just wait a couple years and find one on clearance.

In all seriousness, I think Godins are fantastic.

In all seriousness, I think Godins are fantastic. I know, I had a multiac nylon for years. But sold it along the way.

Bought a couple sets of Doyle Dykes-endorsed GHS strings out of the Homestead Pickin' Parlor bargain bin last week--they're OK, especially at an effective $2.50/set. No sign of them getting me to play like Dykes, though.

I used to have 000-28EC. I loved it. I sold it to get in on a special Gallagher deal through a well-known Nashville guitarist that turned out to be a fiasco cluster-fill in the blank, as long as the word starts with F and rhymes with duck. Worst move of my life. I gave up a guitar I truly loved to wind up holding a bag full of nothing. That is a different story, of course. I would buy the guitar I liked and if it had a name on it, it would not bother me. Les Paul has his name on a few, you know.

I suspect they all end up in a discount bin somewhere eventually. Well, not the Martin Clapton model--I've never played a bad one. And they seem to have a pretty decent resale value--Reverb lists sixteen of 'em at the moment, starting at $2599.

So, swallowed my pride and bought it. No regrets. Funny how many folks here know and like these guitars. I played one years ago, and despite not being a Martin lover, I’d buy that guitar. I know what you mean Paul. I always did like Doyle’s Taylor model, with the white rose. I would not pay a premium for the name, but if it’s the right guitar....

Doyle Dykes has had so may signature models.
Saw him live once. A Taylor event in a guitar store. Quite talented guy. But he swaps guitars more than I do underwear.

I visited with Doyle the one year he played at Winfield. He had a pocketful of these. Gave me one, still have it somewhere around here. (I know.....it looks like it's flipping someone off.)

Dykes has just about the worst tone of any well known fingerstylist I can imagine. If he hit upon a signature guitar that sounds good, it has to be by total accident.
