As a matter of fact, yes. But I'm don't have a hard on to arrogantly denigrate your country or you. I believe Andrew is denigrating somebody, but it's not our country or us. I do disagree that the world is laughing at us. I think the world is recoiling in horror. (That part of it that used to be our friends, anyway. The rest are having champagne toasts.) Yep, you're absolutely right, Ches. And I say that as a Brit with skin in the game on both sides of the Atlantic (a daughter with US citizenship) who fully realises that Brexit is a farce of the first water, and that the British political system is being run into the ground by cretins to the left and right.

Yes, to an extent you're right; much of the hilarity is being generated not by Americans or America per se, but by the ridiculous Trump. Horror, I don't know; maybe disbelief that normally decent and rational people would actually elect someone so clearly unfit to lead, and whose incompetence is demonstrated daily. I'm not singling out anyone specifically by the way, so I hope I haven't given that impression.

Trump may think he won but his chances of bedding Ann Coulter just went to zero. Thanks, that's a mental image I can't unsee now!

Well, at least Trump leads from the front instead of "Leading" from behind like Obama did.

So he's an arrogant trans-Atlantic <insert your own vulgarity here>. And what are the qualifications for such moral and intellectual superiority? Did he take some kind of test?

Well, at least Trump leads from the front instead of "Leading" from behind like Obama did. Yes, he's leading so well that cabinet members are deserting in droves and the 'best people' he hired are being indicted and convicted, his military leaders are openly and publicly critical of his shockingly incompetent actions, he has shown arrogant disdain for the very people tasked with keeping America safe because he knows more than the Generals or security agencies. What a wonderful example of 'leading' from the front.

By 'arrogant' I'm sure you in fact meant 'truthful', 'observant' and 'insightful', but I guess that would stick in the craw, because nationalistic hubris trumps common sense and reality every time.

We're hanging off the edge of a cliff and the root of the above the ledge tree we're hanging onto for dear life is just about to give way. The only hope is to let go of the root and reach for another. So we do the only logical thing. We keep hold of the root we know.

"Horror, I don't know; maybe disbelief that normally decent and rational people would actually elect someone so clearly unfit to lead, and whose incompetence is demonstrated daily. I'm not singling out anyone specifically by the way, so I hope I haven't given that impression." I've heard similar comments from Canadian friends. I wasn't surprised by Trump's nomination. I was surprised that he won only because the polls all indicated that he wouldn't. Both parties had been ignoring a significant chunk of the population, which chunk includes a number of my friends and relatives. Trump spoke to the concerns of those people. No other candidate did. Even people who were well aware of Trump's shortcomings decided to vote for him because he might help them and Clinton almost certainly wouldn't. The people who voted for Trump weren't stupid or ill-informed. I disagreed with their choice but it was a rational decision.
