I can't figure out for the life of me how to register with Mastodon. Perhaps I'll have to ask my nephew. A lot of Twitter accounts I follow have set up accounts there now. Maybe I'll leave it a few weeks. Jack Dorsey and others are working on a thing called Bluesky Social that I wouldn't be surprised to see making a mark.

I’m guessing you’ve been to the Join Mastodon site ==> joinmastodon.org/If not, you start there. You don’t “join” Mastodon, per se, there is no central membership place. You join one of the independent server communities. Doing so allows you to follow or be followed by any Mastodon user. You might choose a server because of a certain focus it may have or you might want to select the country in which the server is located. I don’t have a server account for Mastodon but when I select a VPN provider, one of the things I look for is a VPN host that is based in a country the US does not have privacy agreements with. I might do that with Mastodon as well should I decide to enter in. The Join Mastodon site lists a number of servers they deem suitable along with the country in which they are hosted. If you join a server and decide you’d rather be somewhere else, you can move your account and all your contacts will go along with you.

Dub. I just keep getting told on the registration page that the things I enter into the required fields are not in the necessary format. I'll put it on hold for a while.

No problem joining for me. As soon as I realised that it doesn't really matter which part you join (I joined mstdn.social) - you can still see and find everybody else who has moved from Twitter - it's been pretty straightforward.

I never joined Twitter and don't intend to join any other. I find it interesting to follow the outflow of the Elon thing. He was a media darling for a while. Now it seems like he's going off the rails. It's like a train wreck; you can't look away. But he's crazy smart in a lot of ways. This may be his downfall. Or he could rise like a phoenix. Anyrate, it's good theater.
Maybe he'll run for President someday.

The only social media I’ve jioned is Facebook. And I only keep it because it’s useful for keeping in touch with both distant family members and old friends from my youth. Never saw any sense in twitter, tic toc, etc.
As Bob Dylan said, “Don’t follow leaders, watch your parking meters…”

My two 84 and 86 year old sisters spend lots of time on The Facebook and can’t understand why I don’t & why I won’t use Messenger. One sister, even though I have told her not to 11 million times, still sends things on Messenger so I have to tell her again not to and to email instead(she starts to sweat if I mention texts). I have never had any desire to get on any other social media site. I view Soundhole as more of an anti-social media site. I watch live performances on FB which is just about the only reason I don’t delete it.

Mastodon is like Discord, it’s as noted above is a place with single servers. So, great for bands and writers if they already have a following, not a great place to get new people.
What is funny is that Elon bought something not great to start with. Twitter loses money, which is why he went in and cleaned house, and started looking for ways to increase income. So, 4 billion because he decided to mouth off, and it’s a money loser. Not to mention the fact that he’s a manufacturing guy, and knows nothing about running a social media company. He’s apparently had to hire back some of the people he laid off, either to keep things running, or because of regulatory requirements.
Well, it’s his toy now.

Elon Musk is the new Kardashians. Totally uninteresting to me. No where near. He started Tesla. He started Spacex. He started Starlink. The man has had profound influence on the world we live in. He's kooky in many ways. But I wouldn't count him out on anything. Media darling status comes and goes. But Elon has changed the world already.

He was it’s fourth CEO. It was purchased by him though. Mike

He can purchase me. A simple billion would do the trick.

Elon just spent 44 billion on a company that has never made money, because he shot off his mouth. He could have built a new one for a lot less than that.
