Local boy came out of nowhere.
My dear friend of many years (she and hubby Brian were our mates on the Romania-Switzerland trip we took earlier this year) is a staffer for Mike, has been for 5 or 6 years. She says that Mike is the most ethical, morally upright person she has ever known.
Will that make a difference in this role? We shall see...

Best of luck to him and all of us.
The knock I’ve heard is he voted to not accept 2020 election results. That is concerning. But I like your friend’s report. Honesty and integrity are in need.
Plus McCarthy is a slimy character.

I wish him the best of luck. The country needs a functioning House of Representatives.

The little I've read about Johnson's policy positions make me wish that Tom Emmer had managed to get the job. And I think that Emmer's quite a bit farther to the right than I usually can tolerate--but at least he's not completely nuts or stupid or incompetent. Instead we get a right-wing Trumpist with nice manners.
For the record: Emmer represents our district, having replaed the completely nuts/stupid/incompetent Michele Bachmann. And getting the Speakership would have cemented him in office more or less permanently. But at least we would have had a somewhat less-dysfunctional House--though it would have been just as handicapped by the presence of the GOP rump faction.

There were 139 house members who were stupid enough to vote to overturn the election results with no factual basis to do so. I doubt that any of them has the backbone to admit that he or she was wrong. Now one of them is Speaker of the House.

I doubt that Johnson and I would see eye to eye on very many issues. But the Republicans won the House. One of them gets to run it. Now someone will.

He's already pissed off the Democrats here. There's not a better recommendation for him.

One thing I know about Mike is he is a man of convictions. But he is not a grandstander. He is gentle-natured. I think he will be like a healing balm in a bitter atmosphere. Here's hoping...

I don't think much of anything about our current government is good. But Democrats have been doing that for at least 60 years. That's why I'm watching Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo carefully. If it reverses Chevron v. NDRC, that'll come to a halt pretty abruptly. And if it doesn't we'll probably become a subservient colony of China.

I can't stand the "denier" epithet. It's overused, simplistic, inaccurate, and insulting. It's not an argument. It's juvenile name-calling.

Well, you may not like the word, but the fact remains that millions of Americans deny that Biden won the election, with no proof whatsoever. And that won't go away until there's an open and fair investigation that takes "election deniers" seriously without dismissing them out of hand. I'd suggest you get used to it.
