Holy Moly what a start!
-Some little school in Michigan no has ever heard of called Oakland University knocked off the Bluest of Bluebloods, big fancy pants Kentucky, a school dripping with money for ballplayers, a school that gets its pick of the best of the best, and did I mention all the money they have to buy players with? The entire state is crazy for Kentucky B-Ball, and this little no-name school without a dime in its pockets and a bunch of players no major program wanted knocks them off in a huge upset, 80-76.
The entire world, other than Kentucky, is REJOICING!
Meet the Hero (soon to be a movie):
- Next up, another Great Upset (sorry, Shannon) #13 seed Yale, a team that actually has to study and attend classes and even starts three white guys, knocks off #4 seed (and hot take to make the finals) Auburn in a down to the last second nailbiter 78-76. Wow! Wow! Wow!
And in a pretty even matchup, Colorado and Florida burn down the barn, 102-100, Colorado in the last seconds on a shot that bounced all over the rim before dropping for the win. Holy Molly!
So far, not a good tourney for the SEC.

Oakland University? WTF? That's 45 minutes from the house I grew up in. Well now I've got a reason to care.

That was the most fun I've had watching basketball in years.
Dar asked me "Oakland California?". I said "I don't know. I'll look it up."
Omg. THAT Oakland. For about 15 years we did a holiday art show in their gym.
My coworker Evan said "You know that kid will be selling insurance in two years".
But he sorta made history last night.

That kid from Florida was unbelievable down the stretch.
ESPN did a much better job switching their coverage to crucial moments in other games, but I am very impressed with Turner's studio analysts.
I pick Iowa State every year they make the tournament. Hurry up fellas, running a little short on time here :-)

The Illini looked great. When they play like that, they can beat anybody. Next week will be a BIG test against Iowa State.

Go Creighton! My Alma Mater My boss's alma mater as well. For some reason, I am still #1 in our office pool. The prizes are the one-year possession of one of two trophys trophi. First place gets a trophy with a spinnable "#1" medallion on it. Last place gets a trophy of a toilet. Both are prized.

I don't watch a lot of basketball, but I did catch the Iowa women's game yesterday against Holy Cross. Iowa was sluggish, maybe rusty, during the first qt. but then they got it going. Boy are they fun to watch when they get it going.
Iowa ended up winning 91-65 with Hannah Stuelke, a Ceder Rapids girl, on the bench in the second half with a migraine.
It looked to me like an attempt to intimidate Catlin Clark, when one of the Holy Cross players punched her in the face. Those of us that have watched Clark through high school and college know that she isn't intimidated easily and she isn't afraid to rough house with anyone. The final score showed who ended up being intimidated.

The prizes are the one-year possession of one of two trophys. Up here, we would spell that "trophies." But then, up here, we're weird.

I have been obliterated in my pool, running a dismal hopeless and deeply depressing third behind Casper and the Cat (gloating braggarts the both of them... well, we'll see... their food just might running a little on the late and light side this week.) Anyway, as my pool is dead to me, I want to participate vicariously in yours. Who are your Sweet Sixteens? Who's in your Final Four? Who is the Winner?

These are the teams in my bracket - I listed the Sweet 16 with the teams I have even if they're not in the actual game. Sweet 16: UConn/UAB, Illinois/ Iowa State, Houston/James Madison, Texas Tech/Marquette, UNC/ Alabama, Clemson/ Arizona, Utah State/Kansas, Creighton/ Tennessee. Final 4: UConn/Arizona, Houston/Utah State. Winner: UConn over Houston, 83-79 (the ending score when KU won in 1988 over Oklahoma).
