Home from Vinton with my new Samsung galaxy 13 phone.
To celebrate the new phone I stopped at the Vinton Family Restaurant for a delicious breakfast.

We skied the Men’s downhill course at Snowbasin a week after the Salt Lake Olympic Games. There was a special little gondola that took you up from the top of the main chair to a peak where the start house was. It was terrifying looking down the first pitch. I must admit I sideslipped a fair amount. Those guys had to be hitting 70 after the first 200 yds. Sounds like Beaver Creek. At the very start of the men's downhill, it's pretty flat, you're skiing through some trees, then all of a sudden you come to the edge of the mountain and it's like skiing off the side of an 8 story building. At the end of that drop, which is all ice because it's too steep for snow to stick on it, there is a fall away right hand turn and the racers are travelling in the 70-80 mph range. I don't know if it's correct it I've heard that on that turn your left leg has to support 5Gs .

WOW! So many close calls and he was always able to recover, without losing his momentum.
I've skied the mens downhill at Beaver creek. I was taking it very easy thinking as I was skiing it, what it would be like with gates, jumps and then running at 80 mph. Scary

Spring in Iowa, but, Yesterday my phone (Galaxy S7) quit recognizing the SD card or the card failed.
Plugged the SD card into my computer this morning and it read it, but when I tried moving pictures from card to computer it wouldn't work.
Might be time for a new card/phone

Hard to believe it's Friday. I just got in from clearing some snow away from the house and garage. Phil is coming over this afternoon to make music, we haven't had a regular practice for a month or more, maybe next week we can get the whole crew together. Other than playing two nights in Breckinridge with a local group, I haven't been doing much musically.

The results are in, time to hang up the skies until next season.
I skied a total of 18 day in Colorado this yeat.
4200 miles of driving, about 200 miles with the truck in 4 wheel drive.
Total vertical skied was 225,000 vertical ft. that's the equivalent of skiing top to bottom on a 45 mile high mountain. It means I covered about 270 miles skiing.
Highest elevation was 12,300 ft.
Highest recorded speed was 52 mph
Steepest grade skied 30 degrees (57% slope). To put that in perspective if you drive I70 west from Denver, as you exit the Eisenhower tunnel, it is about 8 miles down hill to the town of Silverthorne. The signs warn 6% grade next 8 miles, shift down. There are runaway truck ramps in this area. The 6% grade equates to about a 3.5 degree slope, so skiing on a 30 degree slope is steep. (Grandkids found a 40 degree slope at Beaver Creek)
And on the last day of skiing, getting off the lift at lunch time, I had my one crash. I was sitting on the chair with a snowboarder on my right. He had his board at an angle as we unloaded and my skis came down on the back of his board. This pulled my feet to the right and I lost my balance and fell left, landing on my left hip, left shoulder and head, in that order.
I'm still limping a little but the good news is I didn't break my left hand (it's been broken twice) so I can still play guitar.
Till next year!

A few minutes ago, while sitting in front of my living room window, playing guitar, I noticed that my front yard was full of Robins. A welcome sight.

"I wonder what clinic will bring today?" Maybe...sick people? The sick ones are the easy ones. It is the neurotic ones that can make the day long. They need good care, too, but are more labor-intensive. While I was in Colorado skiing, 3 weeks ago, I got a call from my PCP cancelling a February appointment. Yesterday I called to reschedule the appointment. First available time, April 1. I was surprised.

I'm back home, having laid my brother to rest last Friday, in the middle of a central Minnesota blizzard. True to our heritage, Hokanson, Minnesota, Viking, the church was filled for the service, a hugh lunch was served following the service and that evening many family members met at my brother's favorite pizza place, Charlie's, in Little Falls.
Now it's Monday, I've been to the Pharmacy, the grocery store and I have a crock pot full of chili cooking and a pot of fresh coffee.

I found out yesterday that my cousin in California lost his wife to COVID on Monday and another cousin in Washington state has a husband who was taken to the ER on last Sunday for COVID problems.
Like Todd said, warm but rain forecast and then a cool down.

We'll be doing a version of Amazing Grace at my brother's funeral on Friday. Several other old gospel songs as well, especially The Old Rugged Cross, one of my brother's favorites. I was once part of an assembled all-male trio to sing this classic at a funeral -- I barely kept it together, as we just somehow managed to hit all the harmonies right and the chills were racing up and down my spine. A beautiful version. I suspect ours will be a little more upbeat. We'll have the church piano in the lead, acoustic guitar, bass, and violin. And at least the four people playing instruments singing. It may become a sing along, with every one joining in.

I'm back in Iowa today after a 14 hour drive yesterday from Breckinridge. I70 was snow and ice covered from Breckinridge through Denver, so it added a little time to our travel. The rest of the way home the roads were clear and dry. Woke up this morning to find an inch of fresh snow on my driveway, which I've now cleared.

I'm sorry to hear this, Darryl. A brother is a hard thing to lose, I can attest to that. Where is home in terms of this, Minnesota? I'll be heading home to Iowa. My brother lived in Browerville, Minnesota, near where I grew up. I'll head up there once funeral arrangements have been made.

Oh, Darryl, we are so sorry to see this news. Condolences and prayers for your family. Is your brother Drake Hokanson? No, I am not related to Drake, as far as I know. My brother was Harlen.

Best: It's been a great 2 weeks skiing in Colorado, good snow, mild temperatures, sunny skies and friends.
Worst: My older brother passed away at 2:00 am this morning in the hospital in St Cloud, Minnesota, the result of a head injury.
I'll be heading home tomorrow morning.

What does if take you to get up to 45 mph, Paleo? How are you timing yourself? I used to get up a pretty good head of steam at Sunapee going left off the lift over a little drop off taking air for about 30 yards then down and across to a long trail that sat below the crossover. It was fun and kept my attention. We use an AP called ski trax, it is a GPS AP that tracks and records your position and speed, etc. As far as getting to 45 mph, there are a lot of places st Breck were it is hard to hold your speed down to 45 mph. Steep, smooth groomed runs. I'm sure on peak 6 where we spent a lot of time today, if I just pointed the skis down hill and let them run I'd be well over 70 mph. Several years ago I did hit 72 mph, perfect conditions, and the right skis.
