I am wondering why it is assumed that Flake and Corker are going to vote for Trump's guy? Both are "retired" Republicans, largely because of Trump. They are free men. They don't have to worry about pleasing the Trump Base. Rather, if either wishes to pursue a future in politics, it would have to be as "Anti-Trump" Republicans. And if they have no interest in continuing in politics, but perhaps have another sort of public presence or service in mind, how better to start on this new career path than by using a "country first, heal the divide, re-build the middle" argument to justify their "No" votes. It sure wouldn't surprise me if Flake, Corker, Collins, and Murkowski all voted no to Kavanaugh. Especially Flake, Collins, and Murkowski. Probably because they don't want to be known as gutless cowards for the rest of their livesand being called out for it in the local grocery store parking lot. You don't think the odds are they would be generally feted? For the two "retired' guys, which vote leads to a university presidency? A seat on a board of directors somewhere? A series of TED talks? For Collings and Murkowski, time will tell, but I'm pretty sure Collings will be fine, Maine is filled with independents. Don't curse the messenger. I am making a prediction with no feelings or preferences attached. I would not be surprised if Flake, Collings, and Murkowski vote no. And if Corker joined them, still not surprised. My prediction is Kavenaugh doesn't make it. (I do expect odds)

We live in an information age. It is possible to find public records of charges against people online. ... james-- this is long, but excellent.

"I am wondering why it is assumed that Flake and Corker are going to vote for Trump's guy?" No one should assume anything about me lightly. I'm a flighty guy.
I assume Flake will vote for him because he said he would unless the investigation turned up something significant.
This wasn't that big an issue to me but it seems to be very big to conservatives, even though they were going to get someone they liked even if Kavanaugh was dropped. There are many things about this big old world I don't understand.

Well, I haven't had much success with predictions these last, oh, thirty years or so. But, I'm standing on my prediction, as long as it is safely beyond Aqua's reach.

Flake, Collings and Corker have all said they would vote to confirm unless the FBI investigation turns up something bad. They've all said, in one way or another, that it hasn't. That's a corner-turner right there. I believe Manchin also has approved of it.
I think Murkowski is the only wild card left. She has a bunch of indigenous Alaskan constituents who think very lowly about Kavanaugh. But her vote alone won't be enough to sink the nomination. Say hello to Justice Brett.

Coming at some point soonish, speculation about increasing the number of justices on the supreme court? It's a knotty subject.

Yep. I think they could have done better but I guess we'll all live. Outcomes of the democratic process are not as much fun when you were making other plans.
The opinion of a retired supreme court justice and 2000 law professors didn't carry much weight but will hopefully stimulate him to try to prove them wrong.
Lots of carnage to clean up on both sides, almost need a Marshall Plan.

It mattered to conservatives? The news is wall-to-wall with images of protesters screaming obscenities. The Democrats mounted an illogical attack, the likes we haven't seen since the previous ones. The press again forfeited their facade of objectivity to lead the fray. The very bedrock concept behind our entire legal system-- the very thing that makes it fair and just-- that a person accused is innocent until proven otherwise-- is trashed because "job interview"... and that pearl soon to join our corrupted lexicon of "because I said so".
Yeah, it's the conservatives who "care".

No, in an emotional outburst (based on prepared notes that he had written himself)--that he then thought he had to apologize for, in a letter to trump's fake news NYT--he blew the interview. (And it's who is suitable to be a supreme, not who is innocent/guilty.)
The 'work' that he did for Bush on surveillance (of americans) and torture were held back. Tho his work with Ken Starr prepping questions for Clinton about what he did with his penis... And this guy's a choir boy?
Stevens, a lifelong republican, saying keep the guy off the court?
I hope there's a surprise tomorrow.

It does look like this one is a done deal, but, by golly, the next Supreme Court vacancy better filled by a Norwegian of indifferent faith and wavering convictions.

All this may come as a surprise, but. Trump is president. He did nominate Kavanaugh. All allegations, none of which involved him as a adult, have been proven. The senate may vote him in. That is the process, so as much as it all of it disturbs me, the process has been observed.
Shit.
