Probably not a bad idea to have an Olympics thread. I'll be watching the opening ceremonies this afternoon, got other things to do tonight. It will be a nice distraction from the politics. 👍

It's on in the other room (the lead up to opening ceremonies). I can listen from here, and will poke my head around the corner to watch some of the pageantry.

I'm gonna start by bitching about the choice to have LeBron James be flag bearer. Not someone that comes to mind as representative of the Olympic spirit. More like a mercenary.

I mostly think of what ordinary Parisians will be putting up with during the Games--crowds, security, lack of access to large parts of their city. . . .
Then there's the gigantic money machine that accompanies and powers the whole Olympic culture. If it were just about running real fast and jumping real high and stuff, it would be OK with me, but there's something vulgarly greedy about the whole operation. Too bad--the athletes, as obsessive as they often are, remain pretty amazing examples of what humans can get up to.

It’s always exciting to see the best in the world do their thing. Looking forward to watching.
This Olympics they should have added an election year competition where the opponents hurl mud balls at each other while shouting vulgar insults.

The pre-Olympics hype that NBC and their local affiliate subject me to make me tired of the Olympics before they ever get here. And archery is at 4:00 a.m.

Yes, but that's 10:00 am in Paris.
Anyone remember when Geena Davis showed up at the Olympic trials for archery in New Jersey, in 2000? She finished 24th out of 28, and she had only been training for two years. That is noteworthy. She was already dreamy enough.

I missed some bits, including Imagine. Sniffled a bit at Celine's performance. Great that she is gaining some mastery of her health condition and vocal troubles.

I'm bummed that there is no curling. Just doesn't seem like an Olympics without curling.

I'm bummed that there is no curling. Just doesn't seem like an Olympics without curling. It's called "Discus" in the Summer Games.

Not that you would have known it from US coverage, but the horse and rider represented Joan of Arc.

Pagan, vulgar, and anti-Christian themes continue to be standard fare for these opening ceremonies.

I've seen/heard it reported that the horse's rider represented Sequana, goddess of the source of the river Seine. Shades of Joan of Arc though. Perhaps a bit of a mash-up?

Pagan, vulgar, and anti-Christian themes continue to be standard fare for these opening ceremonies. Are you drunk? Mike Not a bad idea, Mike. But no, stone cold sober. For one, a mockery of the Last Supper. In case y'all missed it. This sort of thing seems to be standard fare these days. Those games in Birmingham (?) UK last year was a remarkable Baal-fest. All the way back to the winter games in Norway, lots of pagan references. Not a fan, but whatever. But mocking Christian symbols is not cool, just as mocking Jewish, Hindu, Islamic symbols would not be cool. A keen eye would also notice a celebration of pedophilia. But I digress.

The 2022 Birmingham commonwealth games (opening ceremony) was a Baal-fest? First I've heard of this. Where was my invitation? I was not aware that the denizens of Birmingham revered the ancient north-west semitic storm deity so highly.
