Postal workers should perform their duties naked. I do.

I think that there's been lots of great camera work at the games. Some of the multi-angled, slow motion and close up shots have been terrific. The canoe slalom events were particularly excellently handled by the French camera and production team.

The Summer Olympic Games is one of those extremely rare times when I almost wish we had a TV set.

I struggle with the Olympics. Part of me loves watching sports. But, what a massive amount of money is spent in the host country, and in all the programs everywhere bent on developing athletes, including coaching, training facilities, and general support. I also have issues with not only the weird new things they add, (break dancing? Really?), but also the fact that there are so many different versions of so many sports. I like rowing, but do they really need medals and races for all those different sized teams and types of boats? It’s getting more and more frivolous.
And then there is the hubris of the entire thing. The opening ceremony, the parade. I’m not Christian, so whatever allegory was there didn’t bother me, but the whole thing was — WTF did any of that have to do with the Olympics, other than it was supposed be based on Greek Mythology, and the Olympics came from Greece? Every time, it all just seems bizarre to me.
At least they managed to get rid of the gravy train of inspectors who needed to be wined and dined and given expensive presents in order to get the games, and Juan Antonio Samaranch is no longer leading them, demanding to be addressed as, “Your Excellency.”

Sheesh, Rick. You sure stuck a knife in this thread. Not an Olympic peep for 4 days now.
There is still some good to be found. Personally, I think Women's Beach Volleyball is trying to stick as close to the Olympic ideal as they can without getting arrested, and I applaud them for that. And I watch them as often as I can.

The Canada v Switzerland women's beach volleyball semi-final match was excellent. I haven't watched any others in this Olympics yet.
(I've watched the game on a Vancouver beach, but the thought of beaches in Switzerland puzzled me for a moment.)

The Olympics wrap up today and the only few seconds I have seen are the clip posted here of the well-hung pole vaulter.

I've enjoyed what I've seen. I'm a little bummed I'll have to wait 2 years to see some sports I didn't know existed but are fun to watch. I am by no means a sports guy but I have the utmost respect for people who are at the top of whatever it is they choose to do. Whether it's canoe slalom, breaking, biathlon, curling, heptathlon, deadlift, hammer throw, whatever.
People are really incredible.

The whole aura of the thing blows my mind. Such an audio-visual extravaganza. Takes away from the purity of sport and competition to me.
But that’s the world we live in. Higher and higher over the top.
