The story is that it had nothing to do with the last supper. It was a baccinalia -- orgiastic feast to the god of wine.

Yeah, so it wasn't mockery. It was just good old fashioned drunken debauchery to watch with our children as we explain to them what orgies have to do with sports. Oh yeah....who would expect that children would want to watch the Olympics? Since when have kids been interested in sports?

Why is he walking while talking? He's getting some exercise in his busy schedule I guess. Normally he records from home but he is at a Comicon at the moment.

Does anyone know how the ancient Greeks celebrated when they started this Olympic Games idea? If gods were involved, it seems unlikely that they were Christian. Perhaps the modern Olympic committee intended the ceremony to model Ancient Greece.
Greek prototypes were often repurposed as Christian icons in the early days of the Church.

If at some point a hundred cows are slaughtered as a sacrifice to Zeus, I imagine that a few eyebrows might be raised. Apparently French organisers have not revived the ancient Greek tradition of all the athletes competing naked. Boring. ETA - Terry beat me to it.

Probably not a bad idea to have an Olympics thread. I'll be watching the opening ceremonies this afternoon, got other things to do tonight. It will be a nice distraction from the politics. 👍 Yep, indeedy!

Watched the USA vs Germany soccer match. I find the women's style of play is so much more entertaining than the men's. Much more dynamic. I feel the same way about basketball since (like millions of others) getting interested this spring.
Also noticed the crowd shots during the game. What a beautiful group of humans. I would guess many of the fans play the game. The contrast to a typical NFL crowd was striking. The fans of the losing team seemed to be having just as much fun as fans of the other side. Not an angry drunk in sight.

I'm an avid follower of womens' beach volleyball, especially Brazil's team.

I feel the same way about basketball since (like millions of others) getting interested this spring. I said the same thing to Dar last night. I'm watching lots of Clark clips and enjoying the women's game. I've tried to figure out why and I think there are some elements: 1. The pace is slower and easier to enjoy. 2. The bodies are smaller and take up less floor. 3. There's more basketball and less football. 4. They shoot better. What I mean by that is ... my college coach once pointed out to me that because the girl's game didn't evolve from the playground, rather, it began organized, the girls were taught fundamentals from the very beginning. Not so boys. By the time boys start organized they've already developed idiosyncratic shots that are sometimes great in spite of being "wrong" (George Gervin), but the players often succeed in spite of bad fundamentals. They get by on mere athleticism. There's more, but dinner's ready.

The Greeks competed naked too. While watching the women's gymnastics I googled their outfits. There's a different one for each day of competition. And they are $3,000 a piece.

I think the beach volleyball outfits may be more expensive ... per square inch.
