Not anti-Catholic, I'm just puzzled by any religious leader that publicly states that man is more powerful than God. I have read not just this article but several others about the Pope's possible coming encyclical. It has not appeared yet, to my knowledge, so everything being said is, of course, speculation. However, no where does it even remotely suggest that the Pope has said, or believes, that man is more powerful than God. That is a product of your own imagination and , I might add, a colossal heap of bullshit. And I seriously doubt that the Pope will actually declare that any kind of scientific opinion about climate change. It will likely be something on the moral aspects of environmental protections but that will be a far cry from anything technical.

I was not aware we were supposed to declare religious affiliation on the Soundhole. I must have missed that when I read Soundhole Rules of Membership, but I have to admit I did skim a bit. My comment had to do with attributing a statement to the Pope that he did not make. What you think of him and his views really doesn't matter to me. He and I have been known to disagree before but I am not going to attribute things to him that he didn't say just because I might not agree with his opinion. And since the encyclical has not yet been issued it might be a little premature to comment with such authority on that which is yet to be said.

I used to be a devout Frisbeetarian. We believed that when you died your soul went up on the roof and you couldn't get it down.

Peter pretty much captured my view. I find it quite funny the amount of overlap between those who can't say enough about the urgency needed to drive every last vestige of religious thought from public policy and those who suddenly love bending policy to the views of the Pope.

In the Church of Frisbeetarianism, we often start with a reading from the Book of Wham-O.

If you are speaking of me, sir, you have offended my southern sensibilities and I shall begin to oil and clean the family dueling pistols for immediate use. If you speak of someone else, never mind.

He wasn't speaking of you, but I'm going to say he was 'cause I haven't seen a good duel in years. Not that this would be a good duel. But not having seen one in years, I'd even settle for a lame duel with mostly apathetic participants who aim at each other's feet just so's there's less mess to clean up.

Because if you're going to engage in argument-by-dictionary, you need to start with the right dictionary? I don't know why I bother. That would imply that a Catholic's opinion is more valuable than a Muslim's opinion and of course that ain't true. In my religion, or lack thereof, the Pope is no more than a man, any man, who has arrived at some level of power. Not being Catholic though, he has no power over me. He seems to still have some power over you although you claim otherwise. So, if a Muslim equates fatwa to encyclical, that's OK with me.

Ah aim for the heart, sir. My finger is quick and my aim is true. I show no mercy and, when there is a 3 count, I am likely to fire on one. My hearing is off, you see, unlike my aim which is, as I said, true.
And Bruce, Walgreen's has Metamucil on sale this week.

Sigh. OK, one more try, but after this, Bruce, you're on your own.
"Encyclical," in the context of the current conversation, is a technical term used within the Catholic Church. It has a well-established meaning in that context. When a Catholic (or decently informed non-Catholic) says "encyclical," he doesn't mean "fatwah" or "ukase" or "manifesto" or "decree," even though the term might have some semantic connection or overlap with those words.
And to simply assert the context-specific meaning of this term within its home context does not signal agreement with the content of any given encyclical, nor of the reliability of its author, nor the infallibility of the Pope (when speaking ex cathedra on matters of faith and morals, as they like to say).

Anyone who believes in an all powerful deity* (including Wham-O) and believes that man can mess up the way that deity wants his/hers/its creation to work is expressing contradictory views. Have the same problem with many religions and naturally occurring drugs or homosexuality. I just haven't noticed any smiting going on either directly or indirectly. Making me very skeptical not of religion but of religious leaders. So you could say anti-religions but not anti-Catholic anymore than anti-Baptist or anti-Methodist. I've had the same problem with religions attacking pot, cocaine or homosexuals for years long before "man made" climate change became a religion. * all powerful

We had World Book. I'm guessing it's because Encyclical Britannica was more expensive. World Book had better pictures, though.

I am a bit puzzled by this thread. Are you saying the Pope is somehow wrong to have an opinion about man's stewardship of the earth or is this just anti-Catholic bias in general? Neither. It's the death throes of right wing zealots who have staked out there last stand on a low lying island that is being swamped by the rising tide of history. Mike
