I've had 30 or 35 cars
Now I have a 1991 Honda Accord - a quarter million miles. This car is simple, 5sp stick, electric sunroom, electric window. I think I should keep it. And I'm the second owner.
Technology is very unsettling.
That's all

I totally get what you are saying, David, and as I mentioned, I would have liked a backup camera, had the G37X been equipped with one. But my driving routine rarely puts me in any situation where critters or kidlets are gonna be around. I drive at 6 in the morning to a parking garage that has no such risks, my driveway is long enough so that I can see far and wide behind me while backing slowly into the street and my other driving tends to be straight-ahead rather than in reverse. I virtually never go to shopping malls, for instance.

We have dubbed her "Garmalita".

The roof wart is for the pay radio, Bill. Sirus or what ever it's called. I'm with Bill on the phone stuff. If I'm out on a freeway with no one around I might (have once) look to see who it is and answer with, "wait till I pull over" if it's Chris.

Another feature of the front/back cameras are called "drive recorders" here.
They record so that in the event of a crash, you might be proven right--no, you weren't over the line, or yes, you were actually stopped when that other person hit you, my light was still green when I entered the intersection, and so on.

I think the real problem with the new standards for driving equipment, that's cars and electronic add-ons, is that spare parts are going to be scarce by the time you need them. If an after market industry does evolve to make replacements for parts the OEMs stop stocking they're going to be real expensive. The OEM parts are expensive but if you're looking for a computer for a 20 year old Honda and someone happens to have one they'll be able to set whatever price they want. These new cars are designed to be throw aways and largely recyclable but not repairable over time. I'm not too fond of drive by wire either. They're hackable.

My brother used to get these, kind of a Whole Earth Catalog for car parts: (and J. C. Whitney, too)

... These new cars are designed to be throw aways and largely recyclable but not repairable over time.... Bruce, look back, people are reporting 200k miles or more on a car instead of the 90k it used to be. You're now getting two cars (mile-wise) for the price of one.

Every other piece of electronics has gotten cheaper, but not cars.

I hate stupid sensors. Especially tire sensors. Has Toyota ever actually experienced a Canadian winter? "Oh there's actually nothing wrong with your vehicle but the sensor's gone and it will cost $XXX.00 to fix it." You should at least be able to turn off the warning light on the dash.

Just had a 2018 loaner Subaru outback (my 2014 was getting an entirely new short block under warranty due to high oil consumption, but that's another story).
The first time I was going around a curve and the lane departure system steered the car back into the lane against my command, I couldn't wait to get my older Subaru back. I was avoiding an animal carcass on the road and the idiot thing tried to steer me back into it.
Glad to have my old analog controlled vehicle back.

Cars! when it comes to cost, how they hurt you so! Cars! with inscrutable electronics we can't know. Why aren't they like the Falcon (Gremlin/Pacer/Nova), perfect in every way? What's the matter with cars today?

So, in scanning the shorter of Kris' two Subaru threads, I ran across this September 2017 comment from Marshall:
"Well, good for you. And good for Subaru for backing their product. Still, I wouldn't hold on to it long. I'd certainly be checking the oil regularly.
My wife got a CRV this year. She loves it. They are highly rated. No oil problems that I'm aware of."
So in THIS thread, you said she is currently driving a "Honda Hylander," which I assumed was actually a TOYOTA HIGHlander, but now it looks like Honda was right, but it's a CR-V???

Tom, Tom, Tom -- Why do you think The Lord gave us electrical tape? That's funny! I'm not sure if you're kidding but that was actually my solution after changing two sensors that put the oil light on but nothing was wrong and I had lots of oil in my old '84 Corolla. Tape over the warning light and regular check of the oil level.

His price does seem very high. We bought a new Mitsubishi Outlander 5 years ago, the top end model, for 35k. And when I was a teenage, I would have laughed if someone suggested I buy new. I had a 67 Dodge Van, and a 67 bug. Your can’t buy that cheap here anymore, as cars get written off in accidents, so they just don’t live to where they are worth that little.
Mitsubishi does not have a touch screen. Stereo controls are in the steering wheel. The one thing that does perturb me is the automatic windshield wipers. I have a full on mode, and full off, or this mode that replaces intermittent, that senses water hitting the windshield. When that goes, I suspect a small fortune to replace it, and no way around it if I want intermittent wipers. I do like my backup camera, (wasn’t anything I wanted, but it’s nice to have.) And I’m in love with heated seats.
But I agree with the premise on the tech. Years ago, I had a Suzuki GS1100 bike, normal tach and speedo. My body bought a Honday 750 that had an LED readout for all the feedback controls. It was spiffy. I asked the sales guy how much it cost to replace it. $1500. This was 35 years ago. Basically, when it failed, you’d toss the bike, as it would cost more to fix it than the bike was worth.
