Hey Jan, found a picture of you with some actor. Yup, Princess Grace and Queen Jan. Polka music has lots of royalty. So the Cajuns play a diatonic button accordion. Is that your rig?

I do like a traditional wooden canoe. Canoes are a bit smaller than what I've mostly watched on YT. I've watched a few small sailboats and tenders being built. Generally bigger stuff though. A couple of amateurs on the 'Salt and Tar' channel built from scratch a wooden 38 foot gaff rigged ketch, it took seven years. Lovely thing. I have seen quite a bit about Port Townsend and environs wooden boat building. There are quite a few skilled people there. The rebuild of the gaff cutter 'Tally Ho' has been impressive. sampsonboat.co.uk/Sadly I am utterly inept at woodwork. I can go on and on about this stuff but luckily for Maggie Rogers fans and others here, I won't. A friend from Port Townsend/Hawaii/New Zealand/Marshall Islands helped his dad build wooden boats in Port Townsend until Aubie started wandering far and wide. Super interesting man. Are you familiar with the 85 year-old staysail racing schooner Nina that was lost in the Tasman Sea? My dear friends Ricky and Robin spent most of their considerable wealth overflying vast expanses of ocean looking for the Danielle, their only child. They're amazing people who have been helpful to me in my losses. They invested their lives into Danielle. My heart aches for them every time I think of it. An occasional Search for the Nina update comes across my Facebook feed. Sigh

That's a great clip. She's so nervous and then gradually gets into her own song. Very cute.

Memories from long ago of righteous AG forumite Dan Brown of Lake Charles, La. NOT the novelist, believe me! SteveO was in Lake Charles along with his mule. What a memory, going there. Dan was from around Shreveport. He rode the bus to Jackson MS and I picked him up for the drive to Tupelo. Back in the Gathering Era. Um, stories.

An interesting turn of events. 'NPR has suspended the senior business editor who penned a scathing online essay claiming the radio network had “lost America’s trust” by embracing a “progressive worldview,” prompting fierce right-wing backlash and calls to defund the public radio network. '
Saw that. Perhaps what he wrote prompted the suspension w/o pay. But what caused it was writing for another outlet w/o NPR permission. It's in their policies.

My grandpa's '66 Galaxie 500 had a factory-installed 8-track, the first one ever from a car maker. It came with two tapes...a collection of Mancini hits and one I can't remember by Chet Atkins. I never appreciated the music of many people, including Henry Mancini, when I was a kid. Growing up somewhat was necessary to acquire those tastes.
Bill Lear, the inventor of the 8-track, was quite the inventor. The 8-track was a second go-round for him. Long before, he invented the car radio. He christened it the "Motorola". He also designed the jet that bears his name, the Learjet, as well as all sorts of avionics. And yes, he named his daughter Shanda. Shanda Lear

There was a T-shirt in Carmel back in the day with that picture. The caption? "Curb your dog, by order of the mayor."

OJ Simpson has died. And never found the murderer, which is a shame. From AP: LAS VEGAS — O.J. Simpson, the decorated football superstar and Hollywood actor who was acquitted of charges he killed his former wife and her friend but later found liable in a separate civil trial, has died. He was 76. Simpson's attorney confirmed to TMZ he died Wednesday night in Las Vegas. A message posted Thursday on Simpson's official X account — formerly Twitter — said he died after battling cancer.

And there is a distinction to be made between accepting the accuracy and good faith of Berliner's account of the NPR environment and not finding The Free Press the first place I would turn to for a reasoned analysis of cultural-political matters. Then why, in the context of this discussion, bring into question the source if not to tie the article to it and thereby discredit the article? When has that not been the M.O.?

A real pioneer. An interesting part of the Chicago Architectural boat tour is the Montgomery Ward building. They did everything there. It is massive.

I read it. I used to be an avid listener, still listen a bit. A bit more to the BBC. But Uri speaks the truth. I think his indictment paints the whole of journalism in general. I realize that's too broad a brush, but it applies in general as evidenced by "where do we go for news now?".
Makes me sad. All (well, most) the wonderful features I so loved are gone. That etymology thing years ago was wonderful. I miss it and so many others.
Uri vividly confirms what Millring has been saying for years.

At a building science conference I would go to, there'd be a class on building environments. And the instructer would start out with a question. "Raise your hand if you think heat rises?" Then he'd say, "All you who raised your hand failed the course. Heat doesn't rise. Cold air is heavier and sinks, pushing warm air up."
It's gravity, Baby. I'm just sayin' My KC house had circa 1950 radiant heat, copper pipes through the slab. A minor problem was that you needed to know a few days in advance when you were going to want heat, as it took time for the slab to get warm. Replacing the 1950 boiler (maybe 50-60% efficiency?) with a modern one (93% or so) made a huge difference in our heating bill. Our '55 or '56 Eichler home had the same setup. And no a/c. Rarely gets warm enough in San Mateo
