It's that time of year where as fundraising events, huge booyah kettles are fired up for a day or more and round-the-clock cooks add ingredients, season and stir, stir, stir. Booyah is traced to Belgian settlers in the Upper Midwest, who would have called it Bouillon in French, but the phonetic spelling has endured. Very little booyah is served on-site -- the deal is you buy a quart, of a half-gallon or more, take it home and enjoy it through the winter, as it freezes well. It starts with chicken bones and/or beef and pork, and a broth base is made to which veggies such as carrots, peas, corn and potatoes are added. There may be a tomato component in there -- that would explain the reddish hue. Chunks of meat, too, usually chicken. I know this sounds like beef stew, but good booyah has its own distinctive flavor and consistency. It can be quite delicious.

Well, my workweek is just about over, and it was a tough one -- a key vacation absence on the features desk, some special sections that added to the workload greatly, and other headaches.
But! The weekend weather appears to be great and I am looking forward to treating Miss Babzi to an elegant Sunday brunch to mark a milestone birthday. We will dine at a wildly popular Venezuelan place in St. Paul, Crasqui, named after a beautiful isle off Venezuela's coast.

About 150 vintage wooden boats from all over the world are in the Brainerd lakes area up north this week for an annual gathering. This mahog baby is a 1928 Ditchburn Viking.

Don, I don’t know how sharp your knives are, and if you are happy with them, then it’s all good. What I can say is every sharpening system has a bit of a learning curve, and my first knife on the Ken Onion (a old F Dick German steel boning knife) came out really sharp and took me about 5 minutes. Much easier and faster than my Japanese water stones. Mike Exactly. Just about any sharpening system will get your knives sharp enough to cut properly. It's all about how much time you want to spend doing it. I have two quality kitchen knives, both from Wusthoff, an 8-inch chef's knife and a serrated-edge utility knife. Eversharp, a Mpls. store where I bought them at great discounts, twice a year offers super-discounted sharpening for a couple of days, so I let them take care of it.

I was gonna go with popcorn, but my Trader Joe's shopping trip never materialized, so instead I am gonna go with peanuts, which I have on hand. I do have unpopped popcorn, if need be, so I could go old school if I wish.

Renee planted a pot roast seed in my noggin, so I'm just back from picking up a pot roast sammich at Culver's, ordered on toasted rye with lotsa raw red onion and horsey sauce. It doesn't suck. Arnie Palmer to wash things down. Broccoli cheese soup for sort-of-virtue.

Dear Joy, such a loving and beautiful tribute about all that has come before and continues to blossom -- thanks for putting into sweet words what most of us could only hope to do. You are such a treasure (as is that guy you hang out with all the time!) ...

Got home just after 5:00, not as tired as I thought I might be after 5.5 hours of driving. Having an audiobook to listen to helped, I think. The loaner Outback helped, too--a quiet, comfortable ride. Nevertheless, I'll be glad to retrieve our own Outback tomorrow morning, even if it doesn't have Sirius XM. (It fits in our garage without having to fold in the wing mirrors.) I wondered where that almost sexy black Outback came from, and why you were driving it, but regardless, glad to hear you made it home OK. And let the record reflect that you played and sang in fine fashion, as usual. AND STOP DENYING (or diminishing) THAT, which drives me crazy!

Home. Saw a nifty Triumph Spitfire on I-80. It looked mighty spiffy even with stuff strapped to the boot. They let go-karts on freeways!?!?

Made it home. Had a great time. Thanks all. Me, too -- wonderful weekend/reunion. My route home took longer than my route to Vinton on Friday, onaccounta some construction lane closures and detours, but nothing too stressful. Weather was perfect on both travel days. Darryl, you were missed.

Only in Iowa, a tequila joint that closes at 9 p.m. 9:00 is the new midnight. On Saturdays, they go nutzo and stay open until 10!

Its in the Vinton Today online newspaper as a friday night music gig at Beast and Bird BBQ.They do get some big crowds at times.I've had a few people asked about it.Todd and Jay played there and I would say they had at least 60 or so people there. So Vinton now has a new BBQ joint and across the street a new Mexican joint? Are they any good? Does each table have a fkyswatter on it?

Tequilera closes at 9:00pm, Ron-Da-Voo closes at 2:00am, if that makes any difference. Only in Iowa, a tequila joint that closes at 9 p.m.

I am suddenly giggling over the memory of a long-ago caption send-up from a Navy buddy who in an email attached a photo of Ronald Reagan on horseback, taken from behind, that read: "President Ronald Reagan, top, ... "
