"Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Sunday, May 5 in 2024, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican American populations."
Howard - you're wrong - the first text with no quote or an article "I have read that people in Mexico don't celebrate Cinco de Mayo. It is only observed here in the States." It is a minor holiday (in a website or article) Some of the "website" is correct. It was not a minor holiday - PV MexicoPuerto Vallarta Is a resort town that caters to tourists, Americans especially. It’s no surprise that a “party town” would promote Cinco de Mayo if only to attract tourists.

The first I heard the porpoise was around 55 years ago in Chicago. The porpoises were kept at the Shedd Aauarium on Chicago’s lake shore. The lion had escaped from Lincoln Park Zoo near the lake shore but farther north. The lion fell asleep in front of the porpoise tank preventing their critical regular feeding of young seagulls. Not wanting to wake the lion, the keeper sprinkled bread crumbs across it and released the fledgling gulls so they would cross over the lion and into the porpoise tank while eating the bread crumbs.
Whereupon the keeper was arrested for “transporting young gulls across staid lions for immortal porpoises.”

You have to be very careful around orangutans, they’re likely to cut you up with a razor and stuff you up the chimney. At least that’s what I’ve read.

In the early ‘60s I used to see Sleepy John Estes a lot. Do you know if he ever played with Sleepy Joe Biden? Booooo!

In the early ‘60s I used to see Sleepy John Estes a lot. He even played my old Gibson LG one time when his broke a string or something. Sleepy John, Big Joe Williams, Yank Rachell, Hammie Nixon, Sunnyland Slim, et al., used to play once a week at a little place on North State Street in Chicago. Bob Koester (Denmark Records) and Mike Bloomfield ran it. It was pretty amazing for a kid from Iowa.

I played my 1970 D-41 last night at a show over in Newton, IA. For a multitude of unfortunate reasons, it’s the first time I’ve used it on stage for quite a few years. When it’s in proper working condition it’s the best sounding guitar I’ve ever heard. It’s the only guitar I would take out and hold up to my ear and play just to experience its sound. Lonnie had one from the same year.
I’ve been playing my 2004 D-28CW for shows since it has a K&K Pure Western Mini installed and I can use my (née Marshall’s) ToneDexter into the board. It’s the only guitar I ever bought when I wasn’t looking for a guitar, didn’t really want to try it out, but after playing it, had to have. I bought it in, maybe, 2010.
I inherited my late brother’s 1967 D-18. It’s one I picked out in Chicago for him. Our parents bought it for him to replace his ‘40s-something D-18 that had burned up when his place burned. He didn’t care for it well and it got water damage at some point. Marty resurrected it beautifully but my brother had returned to playing piano mostly and it just sat, unused. So now it needs work again. The bridge is loose and it needs attention. I’d get it rehabilitated but, without Marty, my record for locating repair people who actually care about their work has been abysmal.
My lovely Kennedy Archtop will turn 14 this year. Time to apply for a learner’s permit. It’s another guitar that I sometimes play just so I can hear it. I’m still always fiddling with string and setup choices.

We did manage to survive with snow tires and a couple hundred pounds of sandbags in the bed, but the advent of 4WD was really nice advent in the north country. Bags of rocks are better than bags of sand, as the latter can and do leak, allowing grains of sand to fall into various crevices of the truck bed, where they absorb moisture and cause rust. I read that in a magazine once, so it must be true. But the sand can be more useful when you’re stuck on some ice. Maybe plastic bins of sand.

Congratulations, Don.
Are you familiar with the work of Iowa attorney and author, Jim Autry? He has authored several poetry collections, including "Life and Work: A Manager's Search for Meaning" and "Missouri Boy." His poetry often reflects on themes of nature, family, and the human experience.
Jim’s wife, Sally Pederson, served as Lieutenant Governor of Iowa for two terms.
They attended my parents church in Des Moines and were friends, though they became members after I left home. I did work with Sally’s brother in Cedar Rapids.
Jim is just the only other attorney-poet that came to mind.

You might want to check out the new Toyota Tacoma TRD PreRunner. It doesn’t have 4WD but it’s a 2-door with a manual transmission option.
From the review: Alas, the TRD PreRunner is an automatic-only affair. It's a real bummer for buyers looking to pair the PreRunner's looks with the Tacoma's available manual transmission.Oops! I thought I’d seen something indicating standard trans but was clearly wrong.

For anyone with Sirius XM radio I've been chosen to call in to Christal's and my favorite program on the Catholic channel (channel 129) tomorrow. The show is The Catholic Guy in drive time from 4-6 pm EST. The bit is called "What's on a Listener's Mind?" and I have been chosen to give host, Lino, some advice on raising his 7 month old baby girl. The link should give you a pretty good idea of just how normal and goofy the show is. No real preaching, etc. (the producer/cohost is an atheist and the host used to be a circus performer. How do you get goofier than that?). Don't know exactly when in the show I'll be on but when I hear something, I'll try to pass it on. It’s also available as a podcast on Apple and Google, maybe other places too. On edit: Here’s a link ==> catholicguyshow.libsyn.com/I don’t know whether the podcasts are live or not but they are saved online for streaming.

My 13 y.o. grandson just got baptized, his choice as the youth group at his Unitarian Church has engaged him and his friends with activities that a good chunk of his friends find engaging. I didn't realize that Unitarians performed baptism. Is there a difference between Unitarians and Unitarian-Universalists? The church here is UU and I just assumed all the Unitarians are now UU.
