I don't think you have to change your outfits. Your spandex, fur, and feathers are fine. Go with what you know.

The plan is to meet newly-minted Jet Blue flight attendant Baby Dottir in Chigago on Sept 6, rent a car, and decamp for Vinton where she will regale you with her excellent (IMH-biased-O) singing voice. Now I will be motivated to buy some strings for the D-18 and work on some calluses. I told her to submit a list of song she would like to do. Lately she has been listening to Brandi Carlisle. I requested her to give “Different Drum” by the Stone Pony’s. She has a big voice and might could kill that. Keep you posted.

Actually, it points to a major flaw in the POTUS’s plan to protect you guys. Because no matter how big a wall he builds, those sneaky Dakota bastards will still siphon Canadian resources across the border from Saskatchewan, and NOT PAY ANY TARIFFS. Here, if you have a milkshake, and I have a milkshake, and I have a straw. There it is, it's a straw, you see? Watch it. Now my straw reaches across the room and starts to drink your milkshake. I... drink... your... milkshake. I drink it up!

Live by them and die by them. I can't believe a business owner would do that. I wouldn't refuse Al Sharpton or Dick Cheney my services no matter how much I despise each of them. Maybe I have no convictions but I'm not in to tilting at windmills. I would rather make payroll and pay my bills. There is nothing that worries me more than looking in an employee's face and telling him they are laid off or that there is no money and his check is no good.
I hope her convictions don't pull the plug on her employees.

I can't think of one fellow backslider who would give the statement posted above as the answer to the question: "Why did you quit going to church"? I'm sure they exist but I have never met one. I know three just this year alone. It was a good year for the gospel of agnosticism. You know a better class of backsliders.

The most contentious debate I had yesterday was whether any of the New Testament was written in Aramaic, or just plain old ancient Greek. Folks are very invested in making sure everyone understands that that shit was just made up by some charlatans w-a-y future from the eye witnesses. Just a little stick in the eye of notions of inspiration. If the narrative was unbroken from the events to the writing, then the story can be one of redemption. If not, we've got a mythological morality play. The latter won the day in elite scholarship of the 20th century. Thus devoid of inspiration, the pews emptied. Hmmmmm I can't think of one fellow backslider who would give the statement posted above as the answer to the question: "Why did you quit going to church"? I'm sure they exist but I have never met one. Speaking for myself (and maybe more than a few like minded unsalted, savorless individuals) I usually give a smart alec answer along the lines of "Church is infested with preachers" or something else denigrating to those fine upstanding individuals. The last one who asked I replied: "I have literally met hundreds of preachers in my decades of attendance and the number I respect can be counted on half of my left hand". I usually slide away while they process that with mouth agape.

Our 3 weeks of homelessness has ended. The 5th wheel is repaired and better than original. The roof that came on our camper was so thin that I could dig a hole in it without much effort with my fingernail. In our little town there is an RV repair shop that has been in business for over 20 years that has an excellent reputation for doing quality work. They removed the air conditioners and vents, stripped off the factory, thin plastic (wasn't rubber) covering, screwed down additional decking over the existing, and then laid down a really tough, two ply, rubber roof. Things are slack as far as work for me so Faithful Wife and I are going with Baby Dottir to New Orleans for beignets and coffee at Cafe DuMond. We might do a walking tour or look around till it gets too hot. Take care Eh? Doesn't compute. Does "till" really mean "always"? Anyway, enjoy. I like the Vietnamese wait staff at Cafe du Monde. Didja know Antoine's is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the US? 176 yrs, same family what brung it about to start... Their name isn’t Le’Stat or something like that is it?

This will probably not go over well with some here but here goes anyway. Isn't one of the basic causes of immigration problem worldwide (and not just at our southern border) is that the birth rate of the "have-nots" is way higher than that of the "haves"?
Am I wrong in thinking that the a large portion of the most desperate immigrants are usually practicing members of conservative religions that eschew birth control?
IMHO, this will need to change and people will need to stop having more children than they can provide for. (Here is where I might piss off friends) I don't think the Pope has the moral authority to preach to me about "the poor" when his church teaches them that it is a "sin" to use birth control that works. I don't want to hear it from him. If he wants to help the poor, pass out birth control pills after every sermon and preach that it is a sin to bring children into abject poverty.
I can't imagine the hardship and suffering that would drive a parent to put their child on top of a train in Central America to head north on a 3,000 mile journey. It's awful and terrible and heartbreaking but if we don't address the root problem, it will never be solved. Arguing about a fence or a policy is not addressing the root cause.
If too-high birth rates in poor countries is not one of the root causes, where am I missing it?

Up. I feel a bit beat up this morning, but that will pass. I took Dog out for a walk this morning in the cool air. That's supposed to be good for me. Hurt like crap. Joints... I drop your name and basic info occasionally. Our best friend's son joined the Army late in life (34 +-) after pursuing a football career waaayy too long. (My private name for him was Uncle Rico). Dianne and my wife have been besties since the second grade and we lived across the street from them for 25 years. Their kids are like our kids. Brian has some kind of bachelor's degree that a lot of coaching wannabe's have but things just didn't work out. After a series of setbacks he joined the Army. Instead of using his degree and years of college to get into OCS he (again) went the macho route: Combat medic (which he completed), sniper school (status unknown), paratrooper, and eventually Ranger (at 35 'OMFG'). A bout of pneumonia and a broken bone in his foot kept him out of Ranger training (for now). Then.... he meets another soldier, sparks fly, and now she is expecting. His unit is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in a few months- right after the birth. His sargents are urging him to fill out the paperwork for OCS and not deploy with his unit. Back to you. I may have this slightly bollixed up but I have told him and his parents that I have a friend: Colonel, paratrooper, multiple deployments, yadda yadda yadda and rather than post him somewhere that he could serve with his back as is (because of the jumps) they posted him elsewhere knowing (or not caring at least) that it would probably end his career. I usually don't interfere or give advice but I have strongly advocated that he not continue with his present course and avoid jump school if at all possible. I hope I didn't misrepresent your story but tried to impress upon them that if they cast someone like you aside, what would they do with him if his 35 year old body gets messed up jumping out of airplanes. We are hoping that the forthcoming child will drain some of that testosterone and allow him to use the bigger head instead of the little one for once.

I didn't have a problem with what Steves wrote. He has his POV and lives his life consistent with it. I agree with his basic point that our footprint is too heavy in this world. I think I remember this from discussions years ago which included our rock and roller Colonel: that we have 700 something military bases outside the US in 160 something countries.
Evan: dementia before batshit.
If I were planning a trip to Europe, he would be my guru but I haven't seen Mesa Verde or Glacier NP yet so it's not on the radar.

Congrats Ken. I recommend it highly. Hopefully they live within serious spoiling distance. Long range spoiling can be done but it's more expensive. Faithful Wife is an expert at both. Long Range is a boon for Amazon. Now the daily Amazon deliveries are at two locations.
