This current secularist finds Goldman's lumpy stew of assertions about what various religio-cultural populations think and feel not even halfway convincing. And stuff about "self-doomed, infertile, futureless post-Christians" is particularly strange--and interestingly reminiscent of the ethnic-politics assholes who fear that some other demographic will outbreed (and replace) them. What world does this guy live in? (FWIW, no ethno-cultural group lasts forever unchanged or unabsorbed. "O dark dark dark. They all go into the dark."** Fucking get over it.) ** T.S. Eliot, "East Coker" I found that part of the article particularly interesting because it echoes my observations of the current set of young adults. Christian or not. I fear they'll be ill-equipped for the coming set of crises.

Reminds me of having supper one night years ago. We saw a fledgling bird of some kind hopping back and forth just outside the window. Along comes a blue jay and proceeded to peck the poor thing to death while we watched. The cries from the little chick were hard to take. Little Christine cried inconsolably. Since then I've thought of jays as jerks and a-holes. Not fair, I know.

Obviously smart creatures. Smarter than us in that regard it seems. Modern Western medicine has a lot going for it, but I think a lot has been lost to time. The Maasai do remarkable things with plants and herbs found where they are. Though they still need help with malaria!

Bargains? Maybe. Maybe not. A lot of liquidated retailers will contract with a liquidator to do it for them. They can be so stingy...

She sleeps in the kitchen with her feet in the hall. And I'm still crazy 'bout her, that hard-headed woman of mine.

Horseback riding in Red Rock Canyon today. Been looking forward to this for weeks. Have a great day, everyone. Jan My brother-in-law and I rented a car in Vegas once to visit the dam. The countryside sure looked barren, but something made me want to wander off into it. Haven't seen it, but I think I've heard it. Unique bird call. Supposedly, there might be an ivory-billed woodpecker in the vicinity of our camp in Mississippi. The forest service comes out to a particular tree from time to time to monitor. I'm sworn to secrecy. They don't want hordes of watchers to descend on the place. And they need certain confirmation. That's cool, Evan. They took them off the extinct list, right? No one has seen one for decades but enough people have heard them that it's considered evidence that they're still around. [/quote] Still not off the extinct list. It's assumed they are around but they'll stay on the list until hard confirmation.

I reluctantly read Mo's screed on the conflict. It leaves me conflicted. His #3, the two-state solution, is what everybody wants. Everybody, that is, except Israel and Palestine. So the solution is a non-solution because it's not going to happen. If I put on my book-of-Revelation-end-times hat I'm thinking "oh goody! it's all going down now and Jesus is coming back." I wonder what might happen if all players everywhere just took their hands off and quit involving themselves/supporting the sides? Y'all tend to your own business (yes, that includes Ukraine, Taiwan and so on) and let the chips fall where they may. Speaking of Ukraine, why the hell are we fighting a proxy war with Russia? We get exercised about Iran's various proxies and we're possibly the biggest proxy player out there? So much hypocrisy. If you believe that by supporting Ukraine you are supporting democracy and fighting against tyranny, and that Iran is fighting democracy and spreading tyranny, there is no hypocrisy. There two Evans here. One agrees. The other, well. That other Evan says that using Ukrainians to fight a proxy with Russia is very bad idea. Let's be clear. Ukraine will not defeat Russia. Russia will not lose. They won't allow it. It's an ugly reality, but I think it's reality. That Evan says we cut our losses and get out. And get out of our level of involvement in world affairs. Then there's this Evan.

What a mess one person can cause.
We were home when a car hit our house, narrowly missing Christine.
Houses can be repaired. People not so much.
Hadn't thought of a Javelin in years.

Another stunning day. On my way back from an early work outing to Lafayette. Before leaving town I stopped at home Depot for fencing. Same Home Depot where Wendy and I had a hot kissing session when dating. Coupla 60Somethings acting like teens.

Hmmm, Baton Rouge:
Population White alone, percent 37.2% Black or African American alone, percent(a) 52.5% American Indian and Alaska Native alone, percent(a) 0.2% Asian alone, percent(a) 3.8%
Missing percentages I see.

Howard, I don't think you'd like rural Utah. But I do. "As of the 2010 census, 797 people, 334 households, and 217 families lived in [Escalante, Utah]. The population density was 271 people per square mile (105/km2). There were 420 housing units at an average density of 143 per square mile (55/km2). The racial makeup was 95.4% White, 2.1% American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Black, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, 1.5% from other races, 0.3% from mixed racial ancestry and 3.5% Hispanic or Latino of any race." Wikipedia. Out of curiosity I checked out the population density of Comanche County KS, home of the Pyle family farm. 2.1 humans per sq. mi. I don't think there's a breakfast place in the whole county.

Backroads beckon! Maybe I'll run up to Lindstrom and grab a bratwurst. Washed down with coffee, of course. Cute water tower! Reminded me of the pair in Pratt, KS. I'm guessing they added a tower long ago instead of replacing with bigger. In an case some smart alec did this and the town liked it...
