Hot and humid. RAGBRAI report: SIL is still going strong, he made the longest leg of the ride yesterday, from Des Moines to Tama. 90 miles, 4200 feet of climb and an afternoon heat index of 110. Lots of celebrities pop up on the ride from time to time. Yesterday Dallas Clark, former Iowa and Pro football player, was riding. Edit, just saw that there are riders from all 50 states and 20 foreign countries. I should note that Darryl doesn’t mean a 4,200 ft increase in elevation, or even 4,200 ft above sea level. The highest point in Iowa (1,670 ft above sea level) is not on the RAGBRAI route. The lowest point is the Mississippi River at 480 ft above sea level. He probably means they have to ride over 4,200 one-foot-tall bumps. 😎😉

This is terrific! Count me in!
There must be slew of guitar makers I could extort money from for not using their products.

It has been a busy day. I did get a zippy doo dah iPhone 14 ordered for my wife - an early birthday present. Her current phone needs to be recharged a couple times a day. The iPhone 14 has a feature I really like: satellite coverage, so if you have an emergency while you are out of cell range, you can still call for help. We have a lot of dead cell zones around here. I had a iPhone 8 and the battery was dying so it was my turn for an upgrade. I could have had a 14 but just don't need the size or features so I got a SE. Same size as my 8 but just slightly upgraded, better battery, camera and all faster. It will do just fine. As I mentioned, my iPhone 8’s battery is also declining. A couple of weeks ago I happened to look to see if any apps were being particularly hard on the battery. It turned out that the AARP app accounted for 60% of the battery drain. The odd thing is, I almost never open that app. It just sits there. I deleted it as soon as I saw that. My battery’s been much healthier since then. I have most of my apps set so they won’t run in the background. I thought I had the AARP app set that way too but I either missed doing that or it’s always keeping track of what I’m doing. Anyway, if I need access, the browser works just fine. My United Healthcare Plan F policy is AARP branded so I was keeping the AARP app. That turned out to be a poor choice.

I figure I can get the battery replaced at an Apple authorized repair shop.

The earliness and bounty of this year's tomato crop, and the easy abundance of BLTs it has allowed, has led me to a contemplation that only abundance can bring... and I have now come to realize that the heart of the epicurean delight created by a BLT sandwich is based upon the unique confluence of flavors the combination of bacon, lettuce, and tomato produces when placed upon [toasted] bread that has been adroitly adorned with mayo. I was never this reflective when young, I just ate. Now I eat with deep thought. And a gastric vista awaits. Fixed it for you.

Did you see it as a kid, on TV or in a theater? Did it have any lasting effect on you? It was pretty huge for me, and might be a large part of why the local classical station, KSJN, is on in my household almost around the clock. (I draw the line at "Pipe Dreams" early on Sunday mornings, as I really dislike most pipe organ music.) To this day, any of the pieces in that film, which accompanied wonderful animation, provoke vivid memories when I hear them. A real breakthrough movie. Even at my advanced age, I didn’t see it as a kid. It came out two years prior to my birth. My intro was probably in the 1950s watching the Sunday night Disney program. The older I get the more remarkable it seems.

Just to keep the pressure on, I came across a digitized copy of an old VHS tape on learning to play the Cajun accordion. The instructor says he's Dewey Balfa's son-in-law so I assume that is Dewey's daughter playing guitar. I think she was with her parents as a little girl when I got to hear and meet Dewey, the Balfa Brothers, Nathan Abshire, and their families.

LJ got me looking to see how old my iPad is. Mine is an iPad Pro 10.5-Inch (Wi-Fi Only) with 512 GB of storage. Turns out it was made in July 2017. People say it's technically a 2nd generation device but its official "machine model" is iPad 7,3. Mine still runs all the latest iOS updates though there are probably iOS features that are only meaningful in the new models. But mine keeps chugging along doing pretty much everything it ever did. Being a retired computer pro I probably put it to a wider range of uses than most people. You can type your iPad's serial number into the following Web page and get your details. www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgiOn edit: I generally keep using my Apple devices until they no longer do what they're supposed to do. If they no longer accept the latest operating system, seriously slow down, or won't run key applications I replace them. I don't buy new ones just because they exist.

So, a few weeks ago, Elderdottir, who aside from her successful youth counseling practice is an ace fly fisherperson, was contacted by a dear friend, Katie, also an ace fly fisherperson and high-profile online "influencer" for her fishing, for being a cancer survivor and more. Katie had been courted by Explore Minnesota, the state's tourism department, with a proposal: They'd fly her from NC to MN to fish in way-north Lake of the Woods and film her reactions, all expenses paid. I'm not sure if they asked for Katie to suggest a companion or what, but somehow Elderdottir got added to the equation. The idea was to contrast fly fishing with rod-and-reel fishing in MN. They arrived safely today at MSP, were settled in at the trendy Aloft hotel in Mpls., and were somehow able to score patio seating at the Mississippi riverside Owamni restaurant, where reservations are currently booked months in advance. I won't get to see her until Sunday, maybe Saturday, but it can't happen too soon. Those of us who enjoy fishing might like a link to Katie’s videos.

Thanks, Jan, for all of that information. Dub, given my abilities to pick up new instruments I should probably take up autoharp instead. Thought you might enjoy this.

Those are very good stands, Todd. I bought one for Fiddlerina for her baritone ukulele. They let the instrument hang in a way that keeps the center of gravity vary low. Much safer. My stands are the Hamilton KB38 model. The Hercules model you have wasn’t available when I bought mine. (Click image for specs and price) We used those exclusively at Stars Guitars. The reason was a guitar maker in California’s Bay Area discovered during an earthquake that guitars on Hamilton KB38 stands didn’t fall over and break. Guitars on all the other stands fell and were broken during the quake. I can’t remember the guitar maker’s name. I think it was Gary something. Very expensive highly prized guitars. The maker died unexpectedly and way prematurely. Someone here will remember the name.

Stopped by the local Berry Farm that was having an evening of Bluegrass, luckily the opening act didn't play only Bluegrass (heck they even threw in a Dylan song). Some couple named Castle Ridge or something like that. When the other Bluegrass band was getting ready to play we decided to head home and have pulled pork and potato salad. It was a comedy of errors. I burnt the buns while toasting them. The store bought potato salad had fairly "crisp" potatoes, I think they needed another couple of minutes of boiling. Welcome to my pathetic world. Thank for coming, Joe. It was great to see you and Sue.
